Coffee culture in Slovenia - and in the coffee shop you were at, is very traditional - italian like. The base for everything is an espresso and it's the same strength everywhere - as in Italy. If it tasted sweet it's only because of the milk.
If you ordered a capuccino, it is traditional, that it comes with a sprinkle of cocoa. Otherwise, you may have ordered just "coffee with milk" which isn't really an italian thing: it's an espresso base with steamed milk up to the top. Maybe think of it as half of a flat white.
Architecture is in parts (in Ljubljana) very italian, but think of it as northern italian, mixed with austrian - especially and specifically the baroque architecture.
For the food at the end: you went to the most touristy restaurant in the city: most people as far as i know, describe it as "okay" - two much better places with traditional food would be like 200m away: Moji Štruklji ("My Dumplings") and Slovenska hiša ("Slovenian house").
Few other recommendations: for cocktails, Kolibri bar is a must. Also maybe the Fetiche bar. A nice thing to do would be an opera performance or the Slovenian phillharmonic - both quite cheap compared to similar things for example in the USA. And just across from the National Gallery is the Modern Gallery, which has the best coffee shop in town in the basement. For beer drinkers, maybe visit the Union beer brewery and the pub attached to it. Otherwise Slovenia has really great micro breweries which are, compared to the states again, quite cheap (3, 5-6e for IPAs, Pale ales, Stouts...). But the prices are rising a bit.

It's amazing place to live, the only drawback is real estate prices which are among the highest in Europe (except Switzerland/Monaco). Many Europeans/Americans are moving here, that's why (disclaimer: I work in real estate). Italy is much cheaper but lower standard of living...

There are not many tourist traps in Ljubljana, but Sokol is the tourist trap. No slovenian ever eats there ...

If you are still in Slovenia I highly recommend visiting the Kozjansko region. It's not that well known and touristy, but it has a really picturesque nature with rolling hills and many beautiful churches - also a lot of wines and vineyards there!

Slovenia Can't be compared to Italy, Bmbecause it never was a part of Italy.. From the late Middle Ages, the Slovenes belonged to the Habsburg Monarchy, which had a significant influence on the development of Slovenia. However, they were able to maintain their ethnic identity as Slavs over the centuries. But you could find similarities to Italian way of living only on the coast, there is a italian minority that lives there.... we have our own language... and dialects, regions are diffrent and so are the buildings and The major style of the buildings is from the AustriaHungarian Empire. You could find similar buildings in Vienna..or in Trieste. On the coast you can find stone houses ...so each region has its own building traditions..
You should look for Gostilna to find the traditional food . Beer is the thing in Slovenia.. there are many kraft breweries and so is the tradition in beer brewing. There are wine lovers, you would find wine makers near the coast and Karst (Primorska region) and on Dolenjska and Stajerska Region. Just to get the idea 😊... there is much to see and explore and discover avout the history of Slovenia.
