I was really hoping for a more indepth look into the linux networking stack. Things like iptables and prerouting/postrouting, etc. IF you course covers that I would be happy to pay for it.

Great tutorial although it would be nice to go more in depth on netstat command since its maybe the n1 tool of system administrators. On 38:00 spot of the video where you change the hostname it wouldnt be more simple just to edit the /etc/hostname file? its the one that keeps our hostname at least on Fedora linux flavors...Also on 40:15 spot of the video that you are talking about traceroute i had the impression that the three asterisks were firewall usually

The first few minutes... Not quite. Agree though that DNS maintains all the A and AAAA records and this is essentially where you get such information for routable networks. Here's what really happens: Browser checks its cache for host name to IP mapping before executing the operating system's dynamically linked resolver library functions. Resolver library functions check local system caches or network configuration files such as /etc/hosts for matching A or AAAA records. It's only then that the assigned DNS server IP is queried by subsequent resolver library functions. Once the result comes back from DNS, the browser caches it so that it can skip calling resolver library functions for future cache hits. Best idea is to set up a caching DNS server on your network so that if browser and system caches are cleared, they only have to query a local DNS server on the same LAN for a matching A or AAAA record. For each LAN host minus the caching DNS server, set primary DNS server IP to LAN IP of the caching DNS server and secondary DNS server IP to primary DNS server IP of the ISP. Caching DNS server gets its primary DNS server IP set to ISP primary DNS server IP and secondary DNS server IP set to ISP's secondary DNS server IP.

I don't know what I just paid for on your website (the discount seemed insane) but I don't honestly care. I'm glad to have given some back and I'm just happy to have this here. I don't know where I'm headed but I know I have done enough of the high dollar/intense labor work and I'm ready to use my brain.

I wanted to be a net admin years ago and I feel like I'm returning to where I left off! :)

I enjoy your videos but I lost confidence in your understanding in some items when I saw you explain about host files and specifically “use it to make shortcuts to your favourite websites” at around 36m mark. You cannot just make a shortcut to a website like this as the web server you’re trying to masquerade has to know about your masquerade in the vhosts configuration for that site.

I am grateful that you have produced these videos but it might be beneficial for you to understand what it is you’re teaching others as you’ll be giving people misinformation and can make people make mistakes when they could have got accurate information elsewhere.

Disappointed but am continuing on with your videos as there is some useful information in here too.

Thank you for your efforts.
