The new electric car leader?

A minor name change for the second generation electric Niro, sees the Kia e-Niro become the Kia Niro EV.

Let CarGurus help you find your next car:

Even after several years on sale - and a vast number of much newer rivals to compete with - the first-generation Kia e-Niro was the UK's second best-selling electric car in the first half of 2022.

The second-generation car is known as the Niro EV, and Kia will be hoping that, despite the new name, it proves just as popular with buyers as its predecessor.

And it's off to a good start. Prices start at around £36,000, and for that, you get a car with a 204 horsepower motor that's theoretically capable of driving 285 miles on a full charge.

In this CarGurus UK video review, Rebecca Jackson takes a detailed look at this brand new model, evaluating its quality, technology, practicality what it's like to drive and what kind of value for money it gives you.

I particularly liked your comparison of the Skoda Enyaq IV's efficiency stats versus this Kia Niro EV.
Whilst 3.5 miles/kWh is still nothing to write home about, like you said, it's still better than the 'ground-up' bespoke EV powertrain of the Skoda Enyaq.
Considering sister-company Hyundai's hatchback Ioniq - sharing basically the same drivetrain tech, albeit with a smaller 38kWh battery - regularly achieves early-mid 5s miles/kWh efficiency figures, it goes to show that aerodynamically-inefficient SUV bodystyle designs are simply not the ideal for EVs...!

I currently drive a e-Niro and have found the range to be well in excess of the published figures, in fact, as a challenge for charity I have achieved over 400 miles on a single charge. I should get my replacement new Niro EV4 in a few weeks! Can’t wait

I have one on order following a test drive of the base spec, which was surprisingly well equipped. The paddle control for braking assist is brilliant and intuitive, having never drove anything other than petrol manuals. Getting back into my Golf after felt like going back to a Flintstones car.
It's not the last word in excitement, but as a family car it does everything you'd realistically need really, really well.

The charging times are, while technically accurate, somewhat misleading. The charging experience you guys need to show is: You come home, charge at night and every morning the battery is full. If plugging on a regular wall plug it should gain around 20km per hour of charging, more when the battery is discharged, less when it's full". Scaring people with "30 hours charging times" is not useful >_<

Great review, thank you.
KIA is going from strength to strength and this particular model is no exception.

Been driving a first edition e-Niro as a company car for a couple of years, absolutely love it. Practical, comfortable, well held together and quick off the mark when you need it. About to move to the 22 model EV 3. Looking forward to a few of the upgrades, especially the smartphone app to monitor charging etc. which the FE didn't get.

Thanks for sharing Rebecca, this has jumped onto my list of test drive cars if or when I go fully electric. A great cabin and reasonable handling are a must. I must say I'm not a fan of touch controls but this car does a better job than many so you still get the rotary controls but function via a touch screen. I wish we could go back (or forward) to physical controls as you still need to look away from the road with the touch screens. Although it may be more efficient than the Enyaq the latter is available with a larger battery. These two would both be on my list to try.

I found it beautifull and very well equiped. A+ for Kia

I like how they made the front of the car look like an old model Audi A6 approaching you from the rear, but when you get closer to it from its rear it look like an old model Volvo XC60.
Clever buggers.

3.5 mpkh is low. This time of year 4.5 is achievable without much effort.
I'm currently doing 5.4 in my kona.

Regardless of which side of the pond you're on, you can't go wrong with Kia or Hyundai.
So, when is Rebecca going to come over to the states, to race her track car? 👍🥳🤗

Hi anyone, my 2018 EV drives very well at 5.5 M/KWH and most new improved EV’s (doubled or trebled in price!) appear to drive at 3.5M/KWH, Step backwards ?🤔Can anyone help me understand this…

People talking about it being slower at charging? If you read the KIA specs it suggests it max speeds is just over 100kw? Charge time on 100kw charger is 45mins, where as a 300kw charge being 43mins?

I think it will be a success car. I really like it and have already ordered one. I can't wait

My 2019 E Niro has been faultless, I think the new style is an improvement, but for a few bucks more the EV6 has all the advantages, especially the MUCH faster charging. They also made it slower, Kia needed to do more than just a style redo here

What colour is that? I want to order the same one !

One of the best EVs you can buy sub-£40k, and - if I don’t opt for a people carrier in a few year’s time - possibly my choice as my first electric car!

Does anyone know how long you'd have to wait for one here in the UK. I'd ask the dealer but know they will give me an unrealistic timeline. I looked at an Ioniq 5 yesterday, was told at least a year, think I'll keep my Kona for now.

no-oneman.
