Dog Breed Video: Irish Terrier

Ann Bradley has been keen on Irish Terriers since 1960 when her parents introduced one into their family. Her main interests today are in breeding and showing them.

Irish Terriers differ from other long legged terriers in that they are more racey than square which makes them more suitable for activities like agility. They have a wiry coat, like many terriers, which needs stripping but this doesn't need to be done very often and having a dog that doesn't moult is an added bonus. They were originally bred as a guard dog and for killing vermin but, surprisingly, make good gun dogs too.

Although they had a reputation years ago as a fighter, this problem has now been eliminated. Today, they make an active and family oriented dog and their fondness for food certainly helps with their training.

Jack London was a very big fan of Irish Terriers, had several and wrote two (fiction) books about them.

Just rescued one from a kill shelter. 2 year old female, had to sleep on the area rug in the livingroom for the last 2 nights for her to get comfortable around me but now she is starting to cheer and open up. What a fun breed!

As an Irish Terrier owner, this is the most accurate description of ITs that I've seen so far. Most videos just copy old and outdated information from one another. Thanks for giving this fantastic breed justice!

Everything you read here about the Irish Terrior is SPOT ON! I adopted my little Lila from a shelter here in my home town and I didnt know what a great little girl i was taking home with me. I feel bad for the her previous owner. They don't know what they gave up. I love love love my little girl. She is such a special breed and I would love to have another one. Thank you Lord for giving me Lila. ❤

I am delighted to see a video about Irish terriers. I am now on my fourth in the last 20 years, and cannot contemplate having a different breed of dog. However, Irish terriers bark. Irish terriers destroy things. Irish terriers are very difficult to train. Irish terriers are willful and devious.
In other words, completely wonderful.

Thank you for your video.
I am the proud owner of an Irish terrier.
They are a loyal, hardworking, spirited and intelligent breed.
With the right amount of training, exercise and attention they make fantastic family dogs with a keen nose and instinct to chase, track and dig.
Not for everyone but those who want a daredevil in the fields, a guard dog for their home and an Irish gentleman at heart the best dog in the world!
So raise your glasses for the Irish terrier. Slange!!

What a great video, I had a Kerry in the past and LOVED that dog. Maybe my next one should be an Irish.

This woman described Irish Terriers so accurately! I actually never grew up with dogs and had allergies to dogs and cats, but decided on an IT for my first dog after doing extensive research. I had mild allergic reactions the first week with my IT and then gone! ITs are so intelligent, loving, loyal and good-natured. I never worry about my girl with other dogs or children. They love being outdoors and can handle lots of exercise. The video is incredibly accurate, my IT only barks when someone comes to the door. She gobbles up her food and is very food driven but I feed her on a schedule and she is fine. For a treat she'll do almost anything. She was easy to crate train. They're just great dogs all around. I highly recommend them.

I grew up with my first Irish terrier born the same year as I . She lived to be 14 my second one I have for 12 years and I am now 30 latter going to get a new puppy next week. A little girl from a breeder in Tenn. USA I am so excited to have her already picked out a name for her Else. After my Aunt who used to show them in Chicago, my Grandfather was a breeder and showed also. Rudolph Jensen from Chicago. He was really big in the 50s and 60s here in the states.

These dogs have a great sense of humor, they are loving, and incredible athletes. I have a 5 year old IT and I only wish I would have discovered this breed earlier, so I could have more time to experience them.

*THANK YOU SO MUCH* for such a fascinating and informative insight into this wonderful breed. You’ve given me a lot of food for thought and taken me several steps closer to deciding which breed most closely typifies the qualities and attributes I’m looking for in a dog, and would also be the best match for what I can offer the dog in return... 😊🤝🐕

Best dog in the world. My girl runs agility and has taken her AA title. She has given me three beautiful litters, too.
