Where should my tie end? Proper tie length

Thank you. I've been wearing neckties for 40 years and never was sure where the wide end should fall. However, if I tie my tie so that the wide end falls to my belt as you say, the narrow end falls lower and sticks out behind the wide end. This looks ridiculous in my opinion so I make a general rule to tie it such that both ends match.
