Poverty in the USA: Being Poor in the World's Richest Country | Business Documentary from 2019

In 2019, 43 million people in the United States lived below the poverty line, twice as many as it was fifty years before. 1.5 million children were homeless, three times more than during the Great Depression in the 1930s. Entire families are tossed from one place to another to work unstable jobs that barely allow them to survive. In the historically poor Appalachian mining region, people rely on food stamps for food. In Los Angeles, the number of homeless people has increased dramatically. In the poorest neighborhoods, associations offer small wooden huts to those who no longer have a roof.

It’s not getting better. It seems to be getting worse.

If you have a family that loves you, a few good friends, food on the table, and a roof over your head. You are wealthier than most people.

I lived in my car with my son for 4 years, my heart weeps for ANYONE in this situation. I’m working hard so I can be apart of the change for the good in the world.

My heart breaks for this dear lady, Maria. She still smiles with all she is going through. My love and prayers are with her.

I thought I'm poor living in a third world country, but watching this documentary I think I'm very very ok where I am.

I hate when people say that people like this deserve what has happened to them. Being born in a bad place, or having an injury, having some bad luck, or missing one rent payment is not grounds for having your entire life destroyed.

What gets me is when people who are WORKING, often FULL TIME, are homeless. And the concept of major medical issues in your life, JUST ONCE, causing poverty for the rest of your life, is absurd.

The fact that Eric was very well employed but developed a health problem and then on temporary unemployment had to cover the cost of ridiculously expensive medical treatments by himself; eventually burned through all his savings and was left homeless is an absolute testament to how broken the American healthcare system is.

It made me tear up to see Eric share the pizza he gets with the other people he lives around. He has next to nothing and still shares what little he does have to help others. You will truly never meet someone more kind, generous and selfless than a person living in poverty. God bless him.

To describe Maria's situation as a, "fall from Grace" is highly inappropriate and a mischaracterization - despite circumstances beyond her control (as much as we know from what's presented) she's still putting her best foot forward and maintaining a positive attitude which shows her Living in Grace.

She was still so kind, even while being evicted, even with tears rolling down her it's so sad 😔

Those people giving out meals are being absolute humans. So nice to see people helping people.

Maria is the greatest example of making something out of nothing. Despite not having much she still keeps her car and hereself clean. I lover her spirit she is a fighter.

God, America is so broken, and I'm happy to see overseas media cover it. It makes me ashamed to be American. There is no logical reason for people here to be hungry and homeless.

I’m grateful for my family, clean water, food and a roof over my head

I remember being homeless shortly after turning 18 and getting kicked out. I will never forget how I felt hearing "There are no shelters for just men. God bless you and good luck." from over 10 different shelters and churches. I will never forget how quickly it gets cold when the sun sets during winter. I will never forget how temptingly warm the first dumpster was. I will never forget how I felt the first time I had to truly beg for my survival. I will never forget the first time I met the first dog I've ever had in my life, two strays surviving together on this cold, barren rock. I'll never forget how I felt the day my wolf didn't wake up with me. I will never forget my anger that kept me alive and warm throughout it all.

So many people don't realise how quickly things can turn upside down for you. The place where I had been working at for years was bought and most of the staff who were 21+ were fired, I was left unemployed with no way to pay rent. Finding a job was extremely difficult and I could not keep up with rent, landlord was not understanding and so I had to break my lease and leave. Thankfully I had family I could rely on a few hours away who I stayed with until I got back on my feet, but not everybody has that support system, and if I hadn't I would be homeless. Nobody deserves this. Nobody chooses this.

The world needs more people like Elvis.
