DropBox Vs NAS

For many of us that have been using third-party cloud providers such as Dropbox for the synchronisation, backup and anywhere-access of data, the idea of switching to a network attached storage device can be intimidated. The fact that Dropbox gives you access via your web browser, via a mobile phone app and even a downloadable desktop client application for PC/Mac has largely become invaluable to many. With NAS still being a largely new idea for many users, lots of cloud users want to know how NAS compares with Dropbox on all these points and more. With NAS promising that it can do almost everything that a third party cloud like Dropbox can do and even more, it is certainly appealing. So today I want to compare the NAS private cloud vs the Dropbox third-party cloud.

Advantages of DropBox Advantages of NAS
Low Initial Price and Fast Setup Higher start up cost but lower cost over time
Easy Internet Access Internet AND Network Access
Data is Backed up in multiple locations NAS, Cloud, USB Backup and RAID Protection
Extra Storage can be added in minutes (extra cost) Hard Drives can be added/upgraded
Bespoke Protection Options
Direct Access via USB, Thunderbolt, IR Remote and HDMI

The main difference is the Nas offers no protection against theft or fire ... This can be remedied by 1. Ignorning the fact ( not good) 2. Buying a second nas to place in a different location (expensive) 3. Backing the data up ( encrypted so they can't see it) to a friends nas. 4. Having a 5-6 TB usb 3 external HDD which are backed up weekly/monthly and kept at your mums ( other people are available) 5. syncing only the vital stuff with a cloud provider to keep in the free limits again this can be encrypted to stop Google and co spying on you . 6. Combination of a number of the above.

Your calculation doesn't take into account that cloud storage providers increase storage size in time.
