I’ve had so many people asking me to comment on the passing of the beloved Dr John Mc Dougall. Quite of few of you have messaged me worried about whether or not a plant based diet is completely healthy. In this video I hope to pay tribute to this wonderful man but also to address, respectfully some things I’ve haven’t heard people talk about.

Everyone keeps talking about how this man died young. How many people are living to age 77 without cancer, heart, disease, diabetes, or auto immune disease? Especially after having a stroke at 18?

I've been reading comments below video tributes to Dr. McDougall. This one was my favorite:
"All things being equal, McDougall died the way I want to die. He stayed 99% cognitively intact, and could wipe his own butt, and then just died without the drama associated with the typical SAD patient. No surgeries, no endless buckets of pills, no disabling and toxic procedures and treatments, no pain, no anguish. Whatever age I drop dead at, that's how I want to go out."

He had a massive stroke at 18, which caused him to change the way he lived and ate. That is no doubt what got him to live as long as he did. He would say sometimes that he was not going to live to be very old, so he knew the damage that his body had incurred from what happened in his youth. As it stands, he believed his way of eating saved him, I agree. Rest well, Dr. McDougall, you were a TRUE warrior.

Dr McDougall was my hero! I came across a Dr McDougall video on YouTube about a year ago . I was 40 lbs overweight and I have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. So I’m hypothyroid and just couldn’t seem to lose weight. I tried keto, lost 16 lbs, but had a gallbladder attack and had to stop the keto. Of course the weight came right back. I watched his video and went down a rabbit hole, watching many of his and others in the whole food plant based community. Once you learn about the caloric density of foods, it’s THE reason it seems you aren’t overeating, but due to the calories in high fat foods I really was eating too many calories! I started wfpb eating and lost the weight while never being hungry or suffering! I would actually laugh at the fact that I didn’t suffer or feel deprived while watching the pounds go away! I’m so thankful for Dr McDougall and was devastated at his passing and for Mary, Heather and the sons and grandkids 😢 Prayers for the family at this terribly difficult time 🙏💜

His way of eating-whole foods starch/plant based- was how my husband lost 32 pounds and got off all Rx drugs-statins, blood pressure meds and diabetes drugs.

McDougall died the way I want to die. He stayed 99% cognitively intact, and could wipe his own behind, and then just died without the drama associated with the typical SAD patient. No surgeries, no endless buckets of pills, no disabling and toxic procedures and treatments, no pain, no anguish. Whatever age I die that's how I want to go out. I'm 76 now and I do not care to live to be OLD!

Yes he lived almost 60 years after that stroke he had at age 18. He helped so many and told people for free how to eat! You didn't need to buy his books but I did-bought them all. RIP Dr John!

Diet is not a guarantee of living exceptionally long. It is a guarantee of living a healthier life with less chronic disease and more vigor and feeling well leading to a higher and far more enjoyable quality of life. Once you hit old age there are no guarantees. Anything can happen sometimes that anything can be just dying out of the blue for some reason. He died at 77 which is the average age of mortality in the United States for men. Sure, we were surprised by it but he got to live a long tine and was 100% with it mentally and physically until his last breath. That’s all anybody can ask for. He didn’t suffer and died peacefully in his sleep. We should all be so lucky! Thank God he didn’t have to suffer with pain and illness for years prior to his death. His life’s work not only positively affected millions, but he loved it and was fulfilled by it while also having a wonderful family. What a gift to all of us it was to have benefited from his driven determination to give to others! Thank God for Dr. McDougall who showed us not just how to eat right but also showed us how to live a good and fulfilling life!

Another note: Dr. McDougall and his wife lost their house and everything in it including some of their pets only a few years ago in one of the big California fires. Can you imagine the stress and sadness they both faced in their early 70s of losing so much and having to start over. They ended up moving closer to family to start over again. The fire and loss, getting older and his very serious stroke that he suffered when he was young really wore on his health and you can clearly see it in his videos after the fire. God bless Dr. McDougall and Mary for all they did to help people.

He lived his life fully and died in his sleep at 77. Having only come to following his advice in my late 50’s after several serious health conditions had their impact I would consider it a win to make it as long. I don’t agree with him on everything, but he wanted patients to use light not pills to get their vitamin D. I found that following his advice led me to start spending more time outside in the Fall and Winter and that for me this meant my vitamin D levels could be maintained with less supplementation. This simple advice from him helped my mood. Our bodies use sunlight for more than vitamin D production.

Dr. McDougall may have extended his life way beyond the typical stroke survivor! He having a loving wife that supported him in all of his efforts also extended his life! If anything he had proven that a plant based diet can help undo the harms we have done to ourselves over the years of unhealthy eating. High levels of IGF-1 has been linked to cancer but you can easily get more IGF-1 just from eating soy foods. Dr. McDougall saved my life from heart disease and I will forever be grateful!

The man did live until the age of 77. It's a bit of a surprise that he didn't live longer, but he had a full life, lived in Hawaii and treated patients there, and perhaps his body was worn out. He passed out in his sleep with no other afflictions. Thus, I would say, he died very well.

To die in ones sleep with no prolonged suffering is a blessing. I know a number of people who have died unexpectedly within the past 2 years and I wonder if they have been vaccinated? Most have.

This is well presented. Thanks.
McDougall lived to age 77 with thriving health.
It is not how long you live but how well you live long.

Please be honest with people. While Dr McDougall may have had a weakened system from his youth, he also had the J and J which we know many people are dying sooner, with turbo cancers, blood clots, nerve issues, heart ailments. Many around me have died sooner than expected, and rapidly.

I agree with you that it would be helpful to know how he died, since so many of us have been greatly influenced by his work and have changed our lives accordingly. I appreciate how you asked the question respectfully and kindly, and with respect for his legacy. Thank you. I know when his family is ready, they will turn to all of us in community, for comfort and to share what they know with us. Just as you said, Dr. McDougall never ran from the truth and would face this head-on, just as he did everything during his lifetime. RIP Dr. McDougall. May your legacy live on and grow.

After surviving breast cancer, I was introduced to Dr. McDougall by my care team. They said he pointed the way toward my best survival. His dedication to the truth and his simplified way of eating makes the impossible feel possible. Im so grateful to him and Mary as well for designing healthy everyday recipes that could work for me. Their commitment was to me and they didn't even know it. Thank you so much for treating him at his death with such respect. I love that he never had a downhill slide into disease. He kept going until he suddenly stopped. Blessings on everyone affected by his passing.
