Dr John McDougall, the renowned author and physician known for his advocacy of low fat plant-based diets, has died aged 77.

In a statement, his family described him as a “beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, mentor and friend,” and said that he died peacefully in his sleep last Saturday (June 22).

Dr McDougall pursued a healthcare career after suffering from a stroke aged 18. He was left with a lifelong disability as a result of the stroke, which gave him a passion for transforming the healthcare system.

He wrote a number of books on diets, including The McDougall Plan, which was a New York Times bestseller. He was a member of the Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine, a nonprofit health organization promoting preventative medicine and advocating for plant-based diets.

I got to meet Dr. McDougall in person and he signed a book for me. I emailed Dr. McDougall last year to wish him a happy birthday, and thanked him for the positive impact he's had on my life. He replied back, "Helping others is the greatest gift in life."

I was awake in the middle of the night because of pain. I turned on the radio and heard Dr McDougall talking about The Starch Solution. I haven't eaten animal products since. That was almost 10 years ago. Thank you, Dr McDougall. Sending love to Mary.

If he died without medication or dementia, then that was a bonus.
RIP, Doc.

Plant based doesn’t equate to living forever, it means living a better quality of life while alive. It doesn’t make you immune to genetic errors.

I would much rather die at 77 with all my faculties than live to 95 confined to a bed with someone else wiping and feeding me for those extra 20yrs. He went out with his boots on as a beloved uncle of mine would've said. RIP Dr. Mcdougall

Keep in mind that he did NOT die of cancer or diabetes or high blood pressure or any painful ailment. He went to bed and never woke up. There is no better way to leave here.

No, no, no, no, oh, no. Dr. John McDougall was the person who set me on my whole plant food journey. I had searched for causes and remedies most of my life, and it was he who pointed the way for me. His direct, no-nonsense delivery of information was what I needed to see the corruption in food and medicine. He is forever my hero. Bless you, Dr. John McDougall. Rest in peace. ❤

Thank you, I did get to meet him at age of 29 and again at 54. I’m 71 years old and what a different he made in my life.

Dr McDougall saved my life. It does kinda piss me off though, that he didn't outlive my mom who was morbidly obese and lived on grease. But there is no diet that can guarantee longevity. Any one of us can die at any time, for any number of reasons. Many of us are walking around with congenital malformations or inherited disease that we don't even know about. Dr McDougall didn't just have a stroke. He had a massive stroke with major paralysis. He blames his childhood diet, and i believe it because as a child, he had a host of other health problems as well. He went on to live a very unhealthy lifestyle as a young adult until he figured it out. I see a lot of people commenting that they want to know why John died. They want his family to go public with any details. I don't think it's anybody's business why he died. Personally, i don't need any reassurance that his diet works. I went from needing a walker, unable to lift five pounds, to super fit following John's recommendations. I am forever grateful. Thank you John. May you rest in peace.

The other thing don’t point out he lived to 77 not suffering from illness or diseases

Death is inevitable regardless of diet. Imagine if he hadn't followed his own dietary advice. He likely got an extra 20 years. Having had a stroke at 18 means he was predisposed to another stroke. He's an excellent example of his own work.

He made it this far because of his diet. Deserves our respect and gratitude 🙏.

My mother is 96+ and vegan. Her cognitive function is excellent, she loves to read and can discuss current issues.

Indeed, stroke at age 18 means serious genetic predisposition to such an illness and thus having a high chance of re-occurrence. Fact he remained healthy as a horse for almost the next 60 years after is a true testament of the power of a plant based diet. Carnists can mock hi and the diet as much as they want, but the fact is no one on their diet would last that long under the same circumstances.

RIP Dr. John McDougall. You were one of the doctors I listened to before going vegan in 2017. I never would have changed my diet if I didn't first know it was a healthy decision to make. Thank you for helping to spread the word on plant-based diets. Thank you for you passion, and thank you for your work.

Dr McDougall was a wonderful human being - we’re all so grateful to him for everything that he did, helping animals and humans. Such very sad news.

To have a stroke at 18 he didn't have good genetics to start with, so in that context 77 is pretty good.
