I had the MGIB. They told us we had ten years from the time we started using it. (I wrote it down, so I know I didn't remember incorrectly.) Of course, that was not the case which I discovered when I had one year of eligibility left. At that time, I think it paid out something like $200 a month. So I barely got any money out of it, especially considering I had already paid $1200 in to the program. Wish I had just purchased Apple stock.

4:45 this is sadly not true. There are only two ways to get that $1200 if you chose to opt for the Post 9/11 but you paid into the Montgomery.
1. Death
2. A refund after completely exhausting all 36 months of the Post 9/11 GI bill.
Calling the VA or going to the education center will tell you the same thing.

You should do an update video on this as a lot has change for example Montgomery has to be used within 10 years after active duty service vs posts 9/11 which doesn't expire anymore.

Thank you so mich for this. My son just joined and they signed him to montgomary but 911 is way better. Now we know the difference. How can he switch?

Thank you for your analysis.

I feel skeptical that everyone I know says post-9/11 is best financially, yet these same people believe you cant make money off TSP or selling leave days over terminal leave (100% wrong when you do the math). I also feel skeptical that I paid $1200 into a MGIB program, yet the program that costed nothing is going to give better benefit.

Devils advocate: How is the MGIB better? I know you said if youre part time MGIB is better, but is that all?? That's it?

Great video, I am currently on active duty and considering using mine G.I. Bill for a trade school. Knew most of the info in this video but it’s always good to hear other people talk about it and catch little bits and pieces that I may not have known

I’m not sure if you’re tracking that if you’re less than full time you don’t reduce the benefit on a full month basis it gets prorated so you won’t get full BAH either so you’re not losing benefit going part time but just extend out

In boot camp i was forced to choose the mont gi bill because no one would explain our options. here i am three years later finally learning about my real options outside the military.

In my opinion, the Post 9/11 GI Bill is better for the majority of people seeking to attend a 4 year university full time.

you no longer need to use the post 9/11 within 15 years. You have it for life. That's subject to change, but currently part of that benefit. Also, for both GI bills, if you serve less than 3 years and get out on medical that's service related, you will receive 100% education benefits. If you get out in less than 3 years on good standing, you can still use either bill but will have less benefits. As far as switching to the post 9/11 from montgomery after paying for it, you will get refunded the $1200 only after you've exhausted your post 9/11 benefits.

Just went through some different classes on my installation, TAP, education track, some career path course and a class on entrepreneurship.

THANK YOU! Any chance you can do a video about green to gold for active duty enlisted?

You said in the video that I can transfer the post 911 to my child. And if I transfer to my baby he can use it when he's college age (7:08). But before that you said it must be used within 15 years after leaving service. A baby wont be college aged until 17. So the transfer benefit is lost?? Please explain.

Why would anyone ever enroll in the buy up program? You lose money. (600 x 12 = 7200) (150 x 36 = 5400)
