The sad thing about this story is that the fighter who shot down the plane had to keep telling himself he shot an enemy plane. This is because of the families of the passengers blaming him for what he has done. I honestly understand the fighter, he was just told to do a job. That will last for a life time

This episode in my opinion is really sad because both sides all have sad outcomes, the Soviet Pilot believed that the plane he shot down was a spy plane, he wouldn't have been ordered to shoot down the plane if it was a commercial passenger plane, only if it was a intruder or trespasser. Some families of the victims were blaming the Soviet Pilot because he was the one who pulled the trigger but truth is this accident is a lose-lose situation because really Korean Air 007's crew didn't set the autopilot correctly putting the plane into Soviet airspace by accident, the Soviet Pilot who was at the scene tried to get the plane's attention but had no tracers and that one maneuver the KAL 007 pilots did sealed the fate of everyone onboard, The Soviet Pilots view that maneuver as the plane has been spooked and is considered an enemy plane, he's in a scenario where he has to pull the trigger or let the target go and endanger everybody in his country, so he was given the order to shoot down the plane and as a result the Soviet Pilot pulled the trigger and everyone onboard the plane died.

This is honestly one of those cases where when the missile hit the plane, you'd hope that the passengers and crew were killed instantly. Sadly, it seems that they were alive for quite some time given that the plane actually managed to fly for a little while. My guess is that either the aircraft remained intact until crashing into the sea, killing everyone onboard, or, the jumbo jet broke up in mid air, and everyone onboard died from the explosive decompression.

It's about how they entered the Soviet Union's airzone. The fighter must keep in mind that he is hesitate to shoot down an enemy plane, not a civilian plane. His memories about the Cold war and how he shot down a plane, just stay on.

The pilots have went off course and enter soviet airspace because the INS mode was not on

"Oh hey look a civilian airliner" bad ending

All the Soviet pilot had to do was fly alongside the target aircraft and look it over, and the lit up Korean Airlines livery on the tail would have shown him that it wasn’t the US Air Force reconnaissance aircraft he was looking for.

Larry McDonald, the U.S. congressman, was also killed in this accident.

Shooting down an unarmed 747 is not much of a triumph. It was a damn good way to get WWIII started with a U.S. Congressman on board.

In 1983, Cold War tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union had escalated to a level not seen since the Cuban Missile Crisis because of several factors. These included the United States' Strategic Defense Initiative, its planned deployment of the Pershing II weapon system in Europe in March and April, and FleetEx '83-1, the largest naval exercise held to date in the North Pacific

What is sad is that the soviets didn't even check if it was a civilian aircraft even tho they had 2 fighter jets right next to it but they were told to shoot it down.

I wonder if the pilot of the MiG-25 even stopped to think about why the “spy plane” he’s been trying to shoot down looks like a Boeing 747...

Today is 40th anniversary of this accident.

The 747 Was Intercepted By Major Gennady Osipovich (The Sukhoi Su-15 Pilot)

They flew kilometers into the USSR, did not respond to radio messages, ignored the fighter flying around... So they were shot down. I don't understand why it caused such a stir at the time.

I was in the Navy stationed on a ship in Japan. We left port immediately and went to the crash site. It was pitiful to look at. Lots of debris and bodies.
