Korean Airlines Flight 007 Shootdown

Korean Air Lines Flight 007 (KE007/KAL007)[note 2] was a scheduled Korean Air Lines flight from New York City to Seoul via Anchorage, Alaska. On 1 September 1983, the South Korean airliner servicing the flight was shot down by a Soviet Sukhoi Su-15 interceptor. The Boeing 747 airliner was en route from Anchorage to Seoul, but owing to a navigational mistake made by the KAL crew the airliner deviated from its original planned route and flew through Soviet prohibited airspace around the time of a U.S. aerial reconnaissance mission. The Soviet Air Forces treated the unidentified aircraft as an intruding U.S. spy plane, and destroyed it with air-to-air missiles, after firing warning shots which were probably not seen by the KAL pilots.[2] The Korean airliner eventually crashed in the sea near Moneron Island west of Sakhalin in the Sea of Japan. All 269 passengers and crew aboard were killed, including Larry McDonald, a United States representative. The Soviet Union found the wreckage under the sea two weeks later on September 15, and found the flight recorders in October, but this information was kept secret until 1992.

Korean Air Lines flight 007 took place September 1st, 1983, near Sakhalin Island, Russia. It was enroute to Seoul from Anchorage, Alaska. The plane flew into a soviet airspace more than 200 miles (322 km) off course. A Soviet Sukhoi Su-15 Interceptor. The plane was a Boeing 747-230B, all 269 occupants onboard died. The main cause of the crash was because Soviet authorities and government officials thought the plane was on an Intelligence-gathering mission for the United States, although no evidence or proof supported their claim. The plane crash also happened during high tensions of the Cold War which also takes a big part in the planes crash.

Not so fun fact: the U.S.S.R stole both of the black box recorders of the plane for more then a decade they were later found in 2001 I think because the U.S.S.R Did not want to look responsible for the crash leading one of the reasons the U.S.S.R Collapsed later in 1991
