I VOW TO THEE MY COUNTRY is our unofficial national anthem which many of us British would love as our Nation Anthem with all due respect to His Majesty the King. The Festival of Remembrance is what it says it is a festival of music and hymns to Remember our Heroic Military Dead from WW1 to Today.

The Festival of Remembrance is always moving. It culminates in the citing of lines from Binyon's poem, 'For the Fallen',
"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."
followed by the last post and poppy drop in silence. Then some lines from another famous poem is cited,
"When you go home
Tell them of us and say
For your tomorrow
We gave our today"
Always brings a lump to my throat.

Remembrance Day is celebrated in all Commonwealth countries……” the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month “. We shall remember them. The red poppy is the symbol of Remembrance Day. Especially in Canada the poem “ In Flanders Fields “ is recited or sung. It was written by John McRae a Lt. Col. Canadian Doctor . It is a day of solemn reflection on the sacrifice given by all our fallen heroes, and to honour those who have served in previous conflicts. As well we honour our current military personnel.

I always cry when I hear this..also I actually managed to see my brother on TV doing the march past the Cenotaph and taking the salute from Prince William..now the Prince of Wales.
Rememberence Sunday brings me to tears every year without fail. My brother lost a lot of his friends in Afghanistan so to see my bro emotional just about finishes me off.

I think my favourite version of this song is on Sir Winston Churchill - Funeral - the Nation's Farewell.
Definitely gives the tingles!

Took part in this in '95 and '96. Spent three days solid, practicing walking down the stairs in time to the band. Then you realise it's going to be on TV.

Each of the flags will be from a local branch of the Royal British Legion. I guess the nearest equivalent would be the Veterans of Foreign Wars but the modern RBL although it provides services to veterans and their families encourage anyone to join. The RBL started in 1921 after the first world war to look after ex servicemen and provide places for them to meet.

The music is from Gustav Holst - The Planet Suite - Jupiter .... An English composer Rememberance Dyy - the signing of the armistice The 11th hour of the 11th month 1918. "The war to end all wars" . We now commemorate this day to remember all those who gave their life in conflict, that we may have our freedom. This message is more relevant now than ever before. Much love from Nottingham England.

Remembrance Sunday is a day dedicated to remembering our fallen veterans who died in defence of our country, and all who served on our behalf.
Our Royal Family lead the ceremony, and most Brits participate in some way, even if it's only buying and wearing a Red Poppy. All proceeds from the sale of poppies in the UK go to the Royal British Legion in support of British troops, vets, and their families.
The red poppy is a symbol of the poppy fields in Flanders during WWI, where we lost many soldiers, and it's since been adopted in many other countries. I believe you use it now too for your Veterans Day.

There's a beautiful poem called "In Flanders Field" that's worth looking up, as well as the story of "The Unknown Soldier". Both from WW1

Personally I remember my grandad (by marriage but still dear to me), who died in his early 90's, but served as a spitfire gunner in the 2nd world war.

The guns stopped firing in WW! on the 11th hour of the 11th Month and the country holds that sacred. 2 minutes silence is held then. There is a parade at the cenotaph in London where veterans march past, but also in towns and villages all over the country.

This should be our national anthem. It's celebrating our remembrance day, like your veterans day. You can get the words online. Very moving.

Lovely clip. Did the occasion proud.
I Vow to Thee My Country is about duty, honour, patriotism & sacrifice,
Very appropriate when remembering the sacrifices of our mothers' sons.
All gave some.
Some gave all

Thank for your your sacrfice, which made the freedom of millions possible.
