Luke Evan sings 'I Vow To Thee My Country' by Gustav Holst at the Royal British Legion 'Festival of Remembrance' on 12 November 2022.

The words were written as a poem by Sir Cecil Spring Rice and later set to music by Holst, in an adaptation from his 'Jupiter' in The Planets suite.

We Will Remember Them.

Lyrics

I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above,
Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love;
The love that asks no questions, the love that stands the test,
That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best;
The love that never falters, the love that pays the price,
The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.

And there's another country, I've heard of long ago,
Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;
We may not count her armies, we may not see her King;
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;
And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,
And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.

This song has always brought a tear to my eye. However ever since my husband died in Afghanistan 13 years ago I’m afraid the tears just flow when I hear it now. It’s such a beautiful song.

As an American, I cannot tell you how many times I have watched / listened to this beautiful British Battle Hymn…and without fail it produces a tear…a tear of pride!! To all the democratic nation’s military men/women and their families, thank you for your service!!!! Also, a special thank you for those service men, who in the words of an American president… we owe so much to those who gave their “last full measure of devotion”. THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS!!!!

I am Canadian, but this always brings a tear. It has a reverence that only the British have. It is poignant and respectful and beautiful.

Many will not be able to understand that, this represents all that is great about the UK, four countries brought together as one. I served with all four of the union and wouldn’t have it any other way. Together as one

I think the performance of this song must have been especially poignant at this festival because this song is a perfect tribute to not only the armed forces, but to the late Queen. I can’t think of a more accurate description of her than this hymn; I was actually quite disappointed that it wasn't sung at her funeral. She kept the promise she made on her 21st birthday and continued to serve her beloved country up until the very end, even meeting with her last Prime Minister two days before her passing. We will never, ever see anyone like her again. I know she must be smiling down at the King with pride. God bless Queen Elizabeth II, and God Save The King.

I am Canadian and this ceremony was beautiful, and I recognize the male singer I watch many British shows and I have seen him on many as well as American shows and I never knew he could sing, so talented and nice to look at as well!!! We have November 11th for Remembrance Day but this was stunning!!! Thank-you Britain for sharing to the world!!!
