Mason Durell Betha, also known as Mase, was born on August 27, 1975, in Jacksonville, Florida. He was raised in Harlem, New York, and began his career as a member of the Children of the Corn, performing under the stage name Murda Mase. He signed with Bad Boy Records in 1996. Mase released his first single, Feel So Good, on November 29, 1996, and it was a smash hit. His subsequent singles, Looking At Me (1997), Tell Me What You Want (1997), and Do You Wanna Get Money (1998), were all successful, and after many delays, his debut album was released in late 1997 to critical acclaim, selling over 4.5 million copies in the United States and over 7 million copies worldwide. Mase eventually signed with Bad Boy recordings and went on to appear on hundreds of hit recordings for artists such as chart-topping pop vocalist Mariah Carey, veteran Tina Turner, and hip-hop legends like the Notorious B.I.G. He appeared on songs that were successful on the hip-hop, R&B, pop, and Billboard charts. Critics saw Mase as Combs' apprentice, and Combs addressed to him as "my little brother." Mase is recognized for his monotonous, sluggish, and mellow tone. Harlem World executive producer Deric "D-dot" Angelettie told Rolling Stone that Mase "says things in such a way that it's real street but also real easy to understand."
