Luciano was born as Jepther McClymont on October 20, 1964, in Davey Town, Jamaica. "Luciano" has long been known as the king of "conscious" reggae music. His voice has great intonation and pitch. Living in Jamaica, Luciano was influenced by reggae icon Bob Marley and lured to the "one love movement"'s optimistic message. He chose his name, which means "bearer of light." He grew up singing in the church choir and would frequently sing while performing his duties. He learned how to play guitar from his father. Luciano collaborated with producer Freddy McGregor to record for his "Big Ship" label. This culminated in his first strong chart position in the UK with a rendition of Cheryl Lyn's R&B smash "Shake it Up Tonight". Luciano's ability to transition from dancehall to roots audiences distinguishes him as a unique reggae performer. As a prolific recording artist, he has released or contributed to at least 60 albums. Luciano has won numerous prizes, and accolades over the years. In 2007, the Jamaican government awarded him the Order of Distinction as a sign of national pride. Other honors include the "Key to Kansas City," and in 2015, "Luciano Day" in Hartford, Connecticut was established. Luciano also won two Grammy nominations for "Best Reggae Album" at the 2016 Awards.
