15 Abnormally Large Animals That Actually Exist

Although humans are by far the most dominant species on the planet, that's only through our ability to work together. On an individual level, we can easily be defeated by a wasp, spider mouse, or even just a cute kitten with evil intentions. Moreover, it's hard to imagine just how enormous some of the animals are. It's enough to make you wonder if they came across a storage shed full of creatine and steroids. Some animals are cute, petite, and dainty. But if you've read the title of this video, you should know that those animals are officially banned from appearing on this list. Just kidding. Some of the creatures you're about to witness are such gargantuan lumps of muscle that we can barely even fit them on the screen. So in today's list, these are some of the abnormally large animals that actually exist!

15. Big Jake

Some things in this world have their own peculiar form of measurement. Salt comes in pinches, oceans come in fathoms, and for some reason, horses are measured in hands. A hand is actually four inches, which was chosen as the average breadth of a palm.

Big Jake is 20 hands two and three quarters so you'd need 10 adults and a teenager to test this measuring him would be like a weird game of equine twister. He's a Belgian draft horse. Not to be confused with a Belgian bottled horse which normally has less alcohol. Jake lives on Hollow Farm in Poynette, Wisconsin and although he enjoys his celebrity status, he still has a cart to pull. They all have to pull their weight on the farm even if it's 2600 pounds.

14. Hippopotamus

Hippopotamus native to sub-Saharan Africa, these water-loving mammals are among the largest on earth today, males of the species average up to 3310 pounds, but some specimens have been recorded topping out at a staggering 5800 to 9900 pounds! Those are some Hungry HUNGRY Hippos.

Well despite their portly build, they can move quickly. If a hippo feels threatened, it will attack with not only surprising ferocity but also speed, they can run at 19 miles per hour for short bursts. So while they might look cute and cuddly, please appreciate them from afar, very afar. Sadly, we're still waiting on scientists to make house hippos of things so we can safely bring one home.

13. Giant Squid.

For many years we've known that the mythical monster the Kraken was in fact based on sightings of giant squid. But despite chuckling at those superstitious sailors, we're not actually much more knowledgeable about the sea giants today.

It wasn't until 2004 that we actually got the first photographic evidence of one in the wild. It was an eight-meter beast swimming almost a kilometer down. Since then, we have filmed just a handful of examples of giant squid and they're usually between three and four meters long. One was found on Christmas Eve 2015 swimming in a bay on Japan's northern coast. After a week a diver guided it back out into the open ocean. Its new year's resolution was to buy a compass.

12. Knickers the Enormous Cow.

With a name like Knickers, you'd have to wonder if this cow’s owner doesn't like him. Fortunately, it's not his name he's known for but more his size, standing six feet four inches tall and weighing a whopping 1400 kilograms. Knickers is an absolute monster of a steer. Cows aren't always considered the most interesting animal in the world, but regardless, they do provide some of life's necessities like milk and meat for starters.

Apparently, they also make great companions. Knicker’s owner Jeff Pearson says Knickers is the talk of the town and the internet to it seems with headlines all over the world. Pearson was inundated with inquiries about the cow was most keen to see what all the fuss was about. He and Knickers are based in Perth, Australia, a country known for its obsession with giant objects and buildings. Home to the big watermelon, the big banana, the big prawn, and the big potato. It should come as no surprise that knickers the big steer would be added to those accolades. Pearson believes his cow’s size and celebrity status are merely a novelty, but I doubt it'll be wearing off anytime soon.

11. Japanese spider crab

Animations have given us plenty of cute little crabs in recent years. But until Tim Burton takes over as Pixar, his creative director, the Japanese spider crab is unlikely to get a starring role. Why? Well, it's kind of the stuff of nightmares.
