In this video, I’ll be teaching you more about the connection between nicotine and hair loss issues, such as thinning and balding.

This video will also include a look at the general health risks of nicotine (and how they contribute to your hair’s ill health) and what you can do to combat (or eliminate) these risks.

Has smoking and nicotine use been contributing to your hair loss? Let us know in the comments below.

Nicotine is a substance found naturally in the nightshade family of plants (including tomatoes and eggplants). However, tobacco is one of the largest sources of nicotine, with 0.6% to 3.0% of nicotine making up tobacco’s dry weight.

The Health Risks of Nicotine

We’ve known for decades that nicotine is a harmful substance. However, only in more recent years has its full ill effects been studied and better understood. Here’s a closer look at the health risks of nicotine use and how they relate to potential hair loss.

The first point is that nicotine Increases Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is, as it sounds, the pressure level of your body’s blood as it travels throughout the circulatory system.

One risk of nicotine use is the increase in blood pressure it produces.

With blood pressure levels increased, your blood vessels become constricted. This can mean that the delivery of vital nutrients and oxygen is decreased, and your non-essential body parts (including hair) won’t receive what they need.

As a result, high blood pressure can indirectly lead to hair fall by decreasing the nutrients and oxygen that make their way to the follicle. If left untreated, this can lead to permanent balding (as hair follicles will soon die with insufficient oxygen).

The second point is that It Decreases Oxygen

Nicotine isn’t the only substance inhaled when smoking.

Another is carbon monoxide, and it directly decreases the amount of oxygen circulating throughout your body.

Oxygen actually plays an important role in hair follicle health. So, not only does smoking make it more difficult for oxygen to be delivered to the scalp, but there’s also generally less to start with.

One of the main factors in AGA is the presence of DHT, a hormone that is naturally produced and often causes no harmful effects. However, people with AGA have hair follicles which are sensitive to this hormone. When it attaches to the follicles, this leads to miniaturization...

nicotine caused some really bad diffuse balding. I quit, starting using caffeine shampoo, nizoral, and stemoxydine. All my hair came back!

I loved vaping. Every aspect of it. But I didn’t even realize that my hair loss started exactly when I started vaping. Once I put two and two together I quit the next week. Never would have quit otherwise.

I’ve been dealing with a scalp condition for four years. I’ve tried everything and been to four dermatologists and one specialist. I’m embarrassed to admit this but I’ve been chewing nicotine gum for 12 years. I’ve never smoked so this is really stupid. Have you ever heard of nicotine causing folliculitis ? I have scaling and bald patches. I’m quitting!

Thanks for this video. I am going to quit nicotine. I know I can do it. I want to do it so bad. My hair loss has definitely accelerated since I started smoking. It’s time I do this for my future. I am going to do it.

Im definitely not an expert, but I was wondering if blood vessel contractionis that bad. Well its used on cancer patients (as ice patches) to reduce toxins during chemo which sometimes saves hair, so wouldnt that limit the amount of DHT u get throughout the day? With less oxygen ur hair would thin out a bit and be less healthy, but they wouldnt entirely disappear like after exposure of DHT

I have quit chewing, nicotine gum and pouches multiple times. Each time I start back up my hair starts to fall out like crazy. My scalp will itch and each time I run my hand thorough my head there’s about 5 hairs on my hand. Zyn pouches seemed to cause the worst reaction

I think it’s 1 genetics and 2 you can help the hair you have grow thicker or make it last longer on your head, my stepdad is bald and never smoked so... unless you’re taking chemical things it won’t grow back because it’s the natural (genetic) way to go, you can’t stop nature unless if you use chemicals imo, since I don’t want to take chemicals for the rest of my life I will continue my healthy lifestyle (eating healthy, exercise and quit smoking, take supplements like the essential vitamins, minerals, iodine, magnesium) and hope for the best. A good thing about men fearing hair loss is that some will take better care of themselves, while another part will go the chemical route. I don’t have anything against it but it will scare me more if I have to take that stuff for the rest of my life because once you stop most of the hairs you gained will fall out again (I look at it like a less damaging form of steroids).

If already balded, can you regain your hair that you lost long time ago?
