Super simple hot process soap making technique

Try this simple hot process soap making technique if you are a beginner hot process soap maker, have had issues with hot process soap in the past, or just want an easy method that works every time.

With this technique, you don’t need to stir the soap while it’s cooking, you don’t have to worry about the soap reaching all kinds of different stages and you’ll clearly see when it’s done, so you won’t need to perform a pH test.

The soap is cooked slowly on low heat on a double boiler, so you don’t need a crock pot for this hot process soap technique.

Benefits of hot process soap:

○ Hot process soap is more gentle to fragrance and essential oils, since the lye has already been neutralized when the scent is added. You might need less fragrance as a result and you don't need to worry about acceleration.

○ Hot processing soaps can cut down on cure time. (Personally, I still prefer to cure hot process soaps for about 4 weeks because of the high water content.)

○ Hot process soaps can have a different feel than cold process soaps.

○ Hot process soaps have a more rustic, unrefined look. This can be a pro or con depending on your personal preferences :)

○ You don't have to worry about getting soda ash with hot process soap.

○ The clean up is much easier.

Super simple hot process soap recipe:

Oils:
150 g coconut oil (30%)
75 g shea butter (15%)
25 g cocoa butter (5%)
50 g avocado oil (10%)
25 g castor oil (5%)
175 g olive oil (35%)

168 g distilled water

10 g citric acid

Sodium hydroxide lye:
when adding citric acid: 76.3 g
without citric acid: 70.3 g

(29.4 % lye concentration, 5 % superfat)

2 tbsp dried spinach
10 ml fragrance oil (I used 'green tea' by gracefruit)

Cure the soap for about 4 weeks before using it on your skin.

○ Citric acid information

When citric acid and sodium hydroxide lye (NaOH) are combined, sodium citrate is created. Sodium citrate works as a chelator in soap.

A chelator traps metal ions such as calcium and magnesium that can be found in tap water.

These metal contaminants can cause rancidity and soap scum in handmade soap.

A chelator binds to these metals so that they can’t bind to the soap molecules. This way the soap won’t react with them and the soap's lather improves + shelf life increases.

Citric acid does not lower the pH of soap. Instead it consumes some of the lye and increases the superfat. Add 6 g extra lye for every 10 g of citric acid added to a soap recipe if you want to keep the superfat % at the same level.

How much citric acid should be added to soap?

Usage rate in bar soap is 1-2% of the oil weight.

How to use citric acid

Add citric acid to the distilled water and dissolve completely before adding the lye, or make a separate solution of citric acid and distilled water and add to the oils.

Thank you for watching❤ Please check the description box for more details! Based on your comments I have started to think about creating a workbook for those of you who need some help with the soap formulation process. I actually started making it already because I got a little excited🙂 but I wanted to make sure it’s something you would be interested in?
If there is enough interest I will offer it for sale in the near future.

my experience started out with wondering what frankincense and myrrh smelled like. so i bought some on line. and then started making little 3 gram perfume solids. then saw a tutorial on soap making and glycerin soap melt and pour. so i bought some melt and pour and put some essential oils in. and had wanted to mmake my own homemade soap for about six years. then i was finally able to make my own homemade soap. and recently ive tried making my own type of melt and pour. its still a work in progress. but im getting it. i love the easy hot process that you have demonstrated. its not as hard as i thought. ive been wanting to do hot process so when i put the essential oils in they should last longer. cause i cook the soap. excited to try this one type. thank you

Love your style and sense for nature and beauty. Could you please do a liquid soap video? Been trying to get the courage to do a large patch of liquid soap for dishes and hands but had some inertia from what looks like complicated hard work. Lol I’m sure you will have an easy efficient way to do it. Thinking about using your stove stop double boiler method to make the liquid soap. Thank you for sharing.
