It's sad that when a black people goes through mental health issues we dismiss it and call them weak. Smh

“It's not men who limit women, it's not straights who limit gays, it's not whites who limit blacks. What limits people is lack of character. What limits people is that they don't have the fucking nerve or imagination to star in their own movie, let alone direct it.” ―Tom Robbins

Trauma is not a phenomena unique to the black community.

I've notice that the Big Think subscribers seem to overwhelmingly dislike any topic where race is discussed in a white manner that does not favor or coddle white minds. Fear of being uncomfortable is real. I guess it's easier to be ignorant of our faults, because accepting them means entering a new reality.

Every time I hear "black community" I hear generalizations that don't speak for everyone.

Big Think needs to make a video titled : Does the History of black people from the colonial age still affect the black people today in the present and should white people feel guilty about what their ancestors did? Something allong the line of that?

The comments for this video is so hateful and racist! Slaves for over 400 years, free not even 150 years, so yes there still is trauma! But most people here still trying to diminish the issue and the people!

Race is uncomfortable topic that people dont wanna talk about it.

My problem with this is, he is speaking as if all black people face the same types of problems, live in the same type of social structure, and the problems he speaks of are specific to one race . All of which is not true.

I agree. The residual effects of slavery still persist in the black community today and dealing with institutional oppression on a regular basis not only decreases the quality of life, but does a number on the psyche. A lot of black people internalize it as normal, unfortunately and allow a lot of their mental disorders to go unchecked which only perpetuates the dysfunction in their lives. For a lot black men specifically, prison is their mental treatment.

I still have trauma from the Jacobite rebellion of 1715. Yeah, I know it happened 300 years ago, and I didn't directly experience it, but it happened to my community so I somehow am affected by it.

mental health is different for every group. yes black mental health is different from white mental health which is different from asian mental health etc etc. That's why we need mental health practitioners from all different backgrounds to be able to cater the appropriate care to different patients etc

Why isn't the black community rallying for the Japanese Americans that were displaced after Pearl Harbor and put in internment camps? Is it only about one race being more important than another?

Many of you missed the point. Stop being "outraged" about what you don't understand and make an effort to learn. There's nothing to be offended by in this video. Get over yourselves.

You have not experienced slavery, you do not have trauma because of it.

What a *ridiculous and petty* topic.

What has happened to Big Think, there used to be sensible talks like the gross inequality suffered by women due to the patriarchy. Now we have *_this_*.

You have one more chance, _Big Think._

Kind Regards,

He is right. My ancestors were slaves and I still bear their scars. My last name was given to my family as proof of ownership and every time I write my name I get triggered. Don't beat me, master!

But in all seriousness there are some in the black community who talk about past aggressions as if they happened last week. They hold on to them and use them as justification for their own racist views or why black people deserve preferential treatment instead of being treated equally. It is 2015 soon to be 2016 and we need to move past this shit.

I totally agree with this video with ethnic minorities or oppressed people who have mental illness through injustices and the effects of trauma.

I have Native American Ancestry.  My father is half Cherokee.. not once did the Trail of Tears and Cultural Genocide of my Ancestors gave me emotional scarring.  I hold some level of contempt for what the US Government has done, but I don't make it my mission to make others who live today feel bad for what happened centuries before they were born.

I'm sorry African Americans were enslaved at one point in History centuries ago, but at least their people weren't nearly pushed to extinction by the US Government, like the Native Americans were..  Don't bring up "Racial Scarring", when it's peanuts compared to what other Cultures around the world had to endure.  This is simply Passive-aggressive Racism and it's Intellectually dishonest.  Shame on you Big Think for giving this man equal footing with people like Bill Nye.
