I always wanted to see someone making a video about this for ages. Their transitions and balanced exposure satisfy me so much. I know how much time-consuming it took to edit this but you’re getting some traction so congrats!!

Apple keynote transitions are insane, Mercedes and other companies are coping Apple's keynotes now too, that just shows how Apple is not just making the best products to use, but everything else they touch is amazing.

Apple definitely has the best presentations out of any company. Even if you’re not a apple fan, you have to admit it

I’d pay my life savings to be behind the scences when they shoot these. They never fail to amaze me

At 6:30 that transition is actually insane. Really makes you feel they thought “Hey if we can produce shows for Apple TV, we can make some hella great presentations.”

I have to say I do enjoy these hi-tech keynotes but my favorite part is that Apple really tries to shoot as much high-quality video as possible while only using CGI to enhance certain transitional elements between the video segments. It really is first-class.

The transition of Craig running through the rooms in the WWDC22 was just the peak of Apple's editing and Craig's humour! 😂

From what I know though, the high dynamic range of the footage is not a consequence of the camera being “HDR or not HDR”. In fact, that is not really a thing and I don’t really know any cinema camera to natively shoot in HDR. HDR for video (which is very different from HDR for photos and usually refers to a video being HDR10 or Dolby Vision) is achieved from a multitude of factors, and is not done in camera. But that is not the actual reason the footage in Apple keynotes has this wide dynamic range anyway.

The reason for the wide dynamic range that you see in Apple’s video is due to two factors:
1. the camera being cinema grade and having a lot of dynamic range stops (which is an indicator of how wide of a dynamic range the camera can capture). The human eye has 21 stops, and the closest camera to that (from my knowledge) is the ARRI ALEXA 35 with 17 stops. In comparison, an iPhone usually only has 10-11 stops.
2. They shoot in a LOG gamma which also saves a lot more detail both in the shadows and the highlights compared to shooting in a standard REC. 709. The LOG video out of camera does look washed out and lacks contrast. Then they convert this footage to REC. 709 gamma in post and the result is that which you can see. But the end result is not HDR (it’s not HDR10 nor Dolby Vision and it also doesn’t use the REC. 2100 standard for colours), but SDR.

What HDR Video is: First, most productions shoot with high quality cinema cameras (RED cameras, ARRI Alexa cameras, Canon C range of cameras etc) in LOG or HLG gamma. Then they take them in post and convert them to REC. 2100 gamma and then eventually export them in HDR10 or Dolby Vision formats.

If we are talking about the iPhone 12 and 13 being able to shoot in Dolby Vision HDR, that is a different thing, although similar to what I wrote above. The iPhone camera actually shoots in an HLG gamma and then it does the conversion from HLG to normal REC. 2100 in the background. It also adds Dolby Vision metadata in the background and voilà, they can say their camera shoots in dolby vision HDR. In fact it doesn’t, it just converts HLG video to REC. 2100 Dolby Vision in the background.

Nice break down though 👍

I’ve been waiting for someone to make this video sense WWDC 2020. The online events have just blown my mind at how good they are. I tried to replicate one for a school Christmas program that was an entirely prerecorded online event. It was a fun challenge but I didn’t come close to the flawless transitions of Apple.

Can you continue explaining each Apple Event after that because I think this video is the only one I found on Youtube that is the best

it was a 2 hour long presentation and it just popped up on my recommendations one random friday evening and i clicked on it as i was curious. before i realized i was already in 1 and a half hours without realising and just to make it clear im not an apple fan or a techie of any kind but i was so engaged into the video that i voluntarily watched the whole thing without getting bored for a second! my attention span is under the sea usually but the transitions, the videography, the explanations just damn good, crisp and clear. thats just absolutely impressive. apple should definitely develop a product related to cinematography expecially for marketing purposes. its crazy dude 😂

also, who the hell are the editors? did apple mention their name credits anywhere?

Rightttt! i was kept in awe while watching every Apple's keynote, comparing to Google's keynote which seems kind of boring and not immersive at all. Even Apple's ads/commercials are all incredible

I was literally crying over the iPhone 11 Pro reveal video. The sound and the reveal itself is amazing!
