Starting Jan. 1, 2025, all public elementary, secondary and post-education schools in Louisiana must display the Ten Commandments in every classroom.

Critics vowed to challenge the law in court, calling it unconstitutional and warning that it will lead to religious coercion of students.

“The First Amendment promises that we all get to decide for ourselves what religious beliefs, if any, to hold and practice, without pressure from the government,” the Louisiana chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, the Freedom From Religion Foundation and other groups said in a joint statement Wednesday. “Politicians have no business imposing their preferred religious doctrine on students and families in public schools.”

The law requires a context statement to accompany the commandments, positioning the text as “a prominent part of American public education” from the late 17th century through the late 20th century. Schools have to use donated posters or spend donated money, rather than public funds, to purchase the displays.

the best part is he’s rejecting a federal program to put free lunches in schools, which a lot of kids in my district need

It’s hard to argue that the 10 commandments aren’t about religion when half the commandments are methods of worshiping god and forbidden worship practices.

“It’s a historic document.”
‘Is it required for the U.S. Constitution to be posted?”
“Shut up.”

"It's not about religion, it's about right and wrong"
The first 3 are definitely about God

Edit: I don't understand how someone can look at 575 replies and think they should keep replying

Oh, so, we are posting the Hammurabi Code in classrooms? We're starting back with the original law, right? It predates the Ten Commandments by approximately three centuries....

As a Christian it’s stupid to make the Ten Commandments about anything OTHER than God. The Ten Commandments are not a secular set of rules. They’re all very religious.

Never trust a politician who tells you how to worship, or a pastor who tells you how to vote.

Instead of worrying if every child is getting a free lunch at school, that state is focusing on enforcing their religious mandate on everyone. How dumb! 🤦‍♂️

I can see a kid using “rest on the seventh day” as an excuse for not getting their homework done already.

If you are intigrating religion in public schools then churches need to be taxed!

I've seen people here argue "Well schools aren't the government". Thats just stupid! Public schools receive government funding, and are therefore government actors.

Governor: I'm doing this cuz I care for our kids and their well being.
Teacher: sir can you allow this federal program to allow student to have free lunches?
Governor: **rejected**

The irony is that none of those Republicans and the governor live the Ten Commandments.

I’m Catholic and I find this infuriating. The separation of church and state is a fundamental belief of the founders. Every American has the right to their own beliefs— how is one religion is being forced into the minds of children NOT a violation of this right??

Edit: to all of the people complaining, literally read the first amendment. It’s absurd that this is even a debate🤷‍♀️

Even if you're a christian, the idea that Moses was the "original law-giver" doesn't really make any sense. There were plenty of civilizations before the existence of Christianity or Moses that had their own early versions of laws.

As a teacher: I will fucking never post that in my classroom, ever.
