The structure of the spine is created by vertebral bones stacked upon each other with an intervertebral disc in between. It is composed of the inner nucleus and the outer annulus; the inner nucleolus is a soft gel-like material, while the outer annulus is durable enough to hold the gel-like material in place. They both contain water, collagen, and proteoglycan, while the inner nucleus has the biggest concentration. Proteoglycans are important because they attract and retain water which is very important as the discs need to hold water to maintain hydrated and at their full height.

An intervertebral disc sits between two vertebrae and acts as a shock absorber or spacer. If your disc isn’t healthy, you do not have spinal flexibility. The disc provides the spine with structural support and keeps the proper alignment. They allow the spacing between vertebrae so the nerves can exit properly into the body and transmit their signal to the rest of the body,

Discs are often the first structure to show misalignment or degeneration issues. A bulge develops as a result of the inner nucleus not being perfectly centered and off to one side. This causes the bulge out to the side. When bulging discs are present for a long time, the disc can become desiccated. Disc desiccation is when the disc experiences an excessive loss of fluid due to pressure on one side of the disc, causing it to become dehydrated and change its shape.

After being out of alignment for a long period of time, this can lead to disc degeneration which a lot of the time is referred to as natural age-related degeneration. When seen on an X-ray, however, you can see an area affected more than others as a result of the alignment issue that is occurring within that person’s spine. It can slo be caused by bad habits of the body, such as repetitive movements and chronic poor posture.

Symptoms can vary based on multiple factors, such as patient age, severity, and cause. A bulged disc can, at times, lead to no pain, while others can have severe pain. It can cause stiffness and range of motion issues. If in the neck, it can cause pain in the shoulders and upper back as well as hands and arms. You can also experience weakness in the affected area. You can see changes in gait and posture, and in severe forms, it can affect organ function.

Treatment needs to be customized around the patient, meaning looking at the variables such as age, causation, severity, and the patient's symptoms. Proactive treatment is the most important treatment to avoid further damage and misalignment.

At the Scoliosis Reduction Center, we offer proactive treatment and use chiropractic care to realign and reduce pressure to the spine, disc, and nerves. We use therapy, exercise, rehabilitation, and passive therapy to move the spine into a greater alignment which helps the disc realign and become more hydrated so the spine can function at a higher level.
