We love avocados, but it can be tricky to find them at the peak of ripeness. So, we challenged Mother Nature and ran experiments to try to make avocados ripen faster. Were we successful? Ehh

Here are the experiments we set up...

1. Control - a single avocado on our kitchen counter
2. A single avocado in a paper bag
3. Two avocados in a paper bag
4. An avocado and a red delicious apple in a paper bag
5. An avocado and a banana in a paper bag
6. Microwaving an avocado for 30 seconds in 15 sec. intervals
7. Baking an avocado in the oven for 10 minutes at 200F (93C)

My wife swears that just putting them in a dark place, like a cupboard or pantry will ripen them over night. It seems to work.

I buy in bulk when on sale when they ripe I remove the flesh and toss in lemon juice and freeze. Works perfectly. Just set covered on counter when at room temperature. Enjoy. Blessings 💫

I agree with another respondent. Put them on a warm, sunny windowsill! Cute video..avocado commissioners!

In the Dominican Republic, people place their avocado in the oven. But they don’t turn on the oven. They often wrap them in news paper. But this is the first time I see someone place a green unripped avocado in a microwave.

Thank you for sharing

Like you mentioned, I buy 2 or 3 bags of mini avocados at Trader Joe’s. I put 1 bag on the counter to get softer to eat then put them in the fridge and eat my daily avocado from there. I rotate. If they get too soft before I can eat them and will waste I peel them and freeze for smoothies.
I feel best when I eat an avocado every day. 🥑

We buy in bulk ripen on top of the fridge a couple at a time, the rest stay in the fridge. Seems to work well.

Definitely sounds like it's better to get them when they have the dark rind and the slightest bit of give to them. They do keep for a couple of weeks in 'my' fridge without getting too soft.

To get ripe they avocadoes... it's useful to put them inside a plastic bag on the oven (the oven should be off!) I personally ley them there for two or three days and that makes them ripe.

I buy Haas avocados that are unripe all the time, and they're ripe in 48 hours just sitting on my counter. One avocado farmer told me the big secret is to make sure the "nub" (navel) is still on it, and not bare. That little part of the stem still on it signals the fruit to continue to ripen. By golly, it works! If you do use the bag method, the banana is indeed your best bet.

So fun, thanks! I do the bulk thing and it works perfectly. Avocado rotation!

Warm surrounding it only takes 2-3 days at most for rock hard. However if your house is cold it will take longer. If you buy soft sometimes people will squeeze them to much and you will get a bad one if you wait more than a day to eat it.I buy rock hard and green if available and after it turns soft, lightly squeeze to feel soft than put them in refrigerator, will keep for about a week.

If the stem "button" comes off very easily, it's ripe.

I read/saw something about using white flour in the bag with an avocado. It actually worked for me!! practically Overnight!!It's the only reason I buy the crappy stuff (flour).I don't like buying ripe avocados because they can get bruised in the store so this flour trick cones in handy.

It also depends on when farmers pick them. I have had SOO many "bad" avocados (after cutting into them when they appear to be ripe- even a bit green still) It happens because they are stored in too cold of temperatures and then tend to rot rather than ripen.

1.put hard avocados in a paper bar with an apple, they shud be ripe in 24hrs
2. Put them in a bag or tin of flour for 24hrs. They should be ripe to eat afterwards

I buy then in a bundle 5 (each) at SAMS and put them into the closed cold oven for only two days! Regardless of how unripe they are at purchase after just two days they are perfect and ready to eat!! Beats any paper sack approach!

Hi! Thanks for the experiment. Am.surprised the banana was looking fine after 8 days in a bag !!
I live in Arizona and leaving avocados on the counter does the trick. However, often, it spoils from inside out. If you are going by the firmness and then cut it open when soft, it would have rotted from the seed outwards.
Just curious. In India we used to ripen mangoes by dripping them in a bag of rice. Wonder if it would help.
