16,000km of testing: one winner (2025 Ford Ranger Wildtrak vs Mitsubishi Triton GSR Review)

Chasing Cars has kept a Ford Ranger Wildtrak V6 and a Mitsubishi Triton GSR on our long-term fleet for the last three months, with journalist Zak Adkins and production specialist Tom Place in charge of testing.

Combined, the utes have endured 16,000km of testing and in today’s comparison we’re going to put them head to head in a comparison, both on road and off road.

The Ranger is significantly more expensive than the Triton, so can it justify the price difference? Both our reviewers have different opinions on these models heading into this test and today we’ll find a winner.

Buy the triton if it is with your own money and you plan to keep it beyond 100, 000km

Just picked up the Triton, I have no issues with the transmission, smooth every time.
I am changing from a V6 Amarok, I do miss the power but really like the value for $. I couldn't go past it.

I picked my GSR up for $56, 990 with 200km on it and it came with side steps, bonnet protector, underbody protection kit, 31" all terrains, rear steel bar and tow bar kit.

At that price it was too hard to ignore. Ive since spent a further $12k and outfitted it with barwork, winch, spotties, 12V dual battery system, 2" lift, 32" mud terrains, and a mac ute hard lid. I also permanently disconnected the DMS and stop start, which was an easy job.

Now for $67k i have a capable all round tourer with 10 years warranty, and honestly when you pick them up for the price i did they make so much more sense then a ranger, as the question marks around fords reliability, the shocking resale value and the high buy price ruled them out completely for me, they just dont make sense unless you are turning over your vehicles every 4 years or so and have a business to wear the depreciation costs effectively.

Did you just compare a 4 cylinder with a V6?
And I’ll never understand why you corporate shills always fail to mention ford’s horrendous reliability and customer service. It’s almost as if you’re paid?

Triton all day. You can kit a GLX to the 9's aftermarket for under 60k full rig, I reckon the lower spec grills look better anyway. With 10 year capped price servicing it's insane value

It would be a much fairer and closer comparison using the 2.0 ltr Wildtrack, price and power.

Nothing could frighten a Triton. Why waste money on a car that has already had plenty of issues.

You keep saying the ranger Engine is great, but why not mention how unreliable it is and half the warranty of the Triton. Fords marketing budget is no joke, so wouldn't expect anything less from journalists who rely on advertising dollars

I always plan to keep my vehicles at least 10 years, so for reliability and longevity it's the Mitsi for me.

Truth is, I just priced both these cars and is more like 25k difference with what the dealers will sell them for

I hesitated buying a triton for so many years and after driving a mates MR i was sold. Ive had mine for 6 years with not a single problem now 140000kms. I just replaced the injectors as they were due. Intake was taken off for a clean and since putting the catch can on at 80000kms the intake is completely soot free and make no mistake with the power figures compared to other utes as i get full torque at 1600rpm and the vehicle is much lighter then the competition. The triton is a great vehicle

Really shows how wide the Ranger is. The Triton looks like the rear end flexes better which helped in the articulation section. Can't deny the traction control works well in the Triton. Good to see them out in the bush.

Recently drove the Ranger 2 liter 125kw as a loan vehicle and the on road comfort is really nice, I did not enjoy the auto box as it seemed very busy but thats the only thing I disliked while driving. The other thing I noticed is the body is super soft and I was crapping myself when loading it. I have owned the L200 and the MQ Tritons and I can see the appeal for people buying into the market as its a very refined vehicle, , I personally would stick to the Triton as its a brand I really like and its just has the reliability and capability out the box I need.

I drive an everest, the transmission will react the way you drive in general, before you test drive a vehicle ask the dealer to clear the ecu on the transmission. That way you will get the response as designed by the manufacturer.

Only Mitsubishi offers "super select". For those who don't know, this is the rear-wheel-drive bias AWD feature where it can reliably run in good traction tarmac without drivetrail stress and goes 4wd needed. Unmatched by most pick ups.

The auto start/stop on the Triton is painful, there is so much lag

I’m a fan of the new V6 Rangers it looks nice very comfortable the reliability seems to be better than the previous generation but only time will tell.
But it is hard to justify nearly 80 grand for a middle-top trim model (sport) with the v6 motor before extras.
The triton is probably objectively less superior to the ranger but for what you pay for in comparison you’re definitely getting a lot more for your dollar.
If I was in position to buy either one I’ll probably lean towards to the Triton or get a used 22/23 Ranger Wildtrack with 30, 000kms for around $65k, because I can’t justify 80 grand for a a brand new ranger that’s isn’t a raptor.

It’s disappointing to see car reviews get the basics wrong, gives no credibility to the outcome of their review. If they can’t get the dimensions right then what hope is there for the rest of the review. I mean ranger 2208mm wide and Triton 1030mm wide?
