What are you really agreeing to when you click "accept all cookies" or "agree to all?"

Actually the EU laws about "user friendliness" are extremely strict and clear. There MUST be a "accept all" and a "deny all" button equally visible and easy to access, as well as an advanced button that leads to a STRUCTURED and easy to understand selection bit where you can act on individual purposes and on individual "vendors".
That's it.
99% of sites are NOT compliant, including many public administration and government sites. But the rules do exist and are clear.

All the "legitimate interest" stuff has been thrown in the mud several times by the European court, btw, so any site that displays something along those lines is most probably not compliant, too.

When last month google sites suddenly started showing a 3rd button to reject all, just as big and obvious as the accept all and customize button, I had a sneaking suspicion the eu got on their ass again. The whole situation is still far from perfect, but at least * something * is being done

I've been rejecting cookies since the EU passed that law and it is painful. They really make it as hard as possible to reject, sometimes even swapping button positions and colours to trick you.

And if you accidentally click accept.. good luck find those settings ever again.

I've always hoped when I click accept all, someone would post me some freshly baked ones.

"Hate yourself? Leafs season tickets on sale now!"

Friggin' priceless! As a Wings fan, I approve.

My general rule for a quick link article website from Twitter or facebook etc. if it doesn't have a reject all button I class it as a spam site and don't visit.

I accept them all, but when the session is over and I close Firefox, I've set it to delete cookies from a long list of sites that I don't have accounts for, so don't need their cookies to stay logged in. Also, I briefly open Firefox once more after that and go through the most recent remaining cookies and delete the ones the automatic deletion missed. (But I leave the cookies for sites I want to stay logged in.)

I really hope Firefox will stay around, because it's the only browser I'm aware of having such easy and detailed access to cookies.

IDCAC is functionally uBlock now, as some pages block content, asking you to accept cookies before allowing to view its content.

And Anthony is looking real good

Samsung smart TVs are the worst for Ad tracking and info sharing. It took me 45 minutes to disagree with all the Ad tracking. 😭

Cookies aren't empty calories, they're calories filled with love!

I never 'accept all', so I've spent quite a bit of time digging through cookie option menus of various levels of complexity. On a couple of occasions, I just went 'fuck it', and left the website altogether because finding a way to reject cookies was taking so long.

The modern internet today is very annoying

My favourite is the "legitimate interest" cookies you can't find without knowing to look.

Firefox just prompted me about trying their new cookie protection feature which limits cookies to the website you're on. Thanks to this video, I know exactly what that means and why I should accept it!

I like how everyone seems to assume that we can trust that a "reject all" button will do what it claims to, even though it's just a button and could be programmed to do anything.

pro-tip: a lot of websites hide their trackers behind "legitimate interest". this means that even if you click the "deny" button, they still place some (sometimes a lot) third party cookies because they interpret a loophole in the law very liberally. in theory, you should be able to reject their "legitimate interest" as well, but just use the browser's cookie blocking or an extension like ublock origin

I work in data protection in the UK and this video was really good! There’s obviously a lot more detail but in 5 minutes you nailed it in a fun way.

I may even reference this video in training going forward!

The "Hate yourself? Leafs season Tickets on sale now!" had me in tears

Vivaldi includes a simple version of an auto rejection tool integrated, althought it only works with a few select sites, but if you combine it with other privacy oriented already integrated features, it makes for a quite decent peace of mind.
