How to learn the potting angle!

In this video I talk about how I’ve found that a lot of people make the mistake of not checking the cue ball enough when lining up potting angles.

it s one of the best pieces of advice you've ever given, and that's saying something. but i think a large percentage of the people watching this won't get it

I 100% agree with all of this. I have tried every aiming "system" there is and while all of them have some benefits, they're not fool-proof and can often times take the player out of a rhythm in an attempt to get the aim just right. At the end of the day, hitting a million balls and recognizing angles becomes the absolute best way where it takes thinking about the aim almost entirely out of the equation, thus allowing you to focus on the cue ball and making sure you're not putting any unwanted amount of English on it. So if you're struggling with a particular shot, just set it up and hit over and over and over until your brain automatically recognizes the angle and you'll find yourself making more balls than ever.

I have been having alignment and aiming issue for years and recently I found that while standing and while my right leg is on line of aim (even if I line up with belly button/middle of body\), so while standing I lean my head or upper body towards my right leg, I feel like I was told to bring the head on top of my right foot and hold it there and then walk in, so while doing the mini walk, putting right leg, and left leg I make sure that head stays there.
However when I am down I feel like I am leaning towards my right side, and ofcourse no matter what I try I have alignment and aiming issue.

I also can see that while standing even before doing the mini walk my shoulders are not level and I am leaning towards right while sighting the shot, and ofcourse when I do the mini walk and get down my head stays there, but feels that I am leaning to right.
However I tried to hold the my shoulder straight, but it all ends up the same.
I tried pointing my nose to object ball while standing, don’t know why but I am leaning or bringing my head on top of my right feet (line of aim or behind cueball) while standing. And I am down I am not balanced and this is causing alignment and aiming problem.

I changed stance to square or boxing, still same bad habbit.
Please help me if you can

You've helped me improve a lot Micheal! Every shot I think to myself "Find the middle of the cue ball". I have began potting more consistently. Highest break 38.
I've watched Break from Life, Barry Stark, Stephen Hendry and Barton Snooker on Youtube but you've helped me the most.

I think this is a good basic thing that most don't do, focusing on the white alignment, I've been playing for 40 plus years, and still enjoy the game, but very frustrated my game does progress past the occasional 30/40 break, before seeing your video I've been trying to line up the cue and focusing on the white before playing the shot rather than focusing on the angle of the shot and I finding I'm getting more consistent with my cueing, still not getting past the occasional 30/40 breaks, but i think this is more to do with the amount i play around 8 frames a week 🙄 which of course is another factor with the reparation you talk about.
I have to say I'm thoroughly enjoying your channel Michael, keep up the good work. P

As an occasional player I have flashes of mediocrity where I can knock 3 or 4 balls in on the trot. Sometimes I can knock a long red in and hold for my pre chosen colour . But more often than not I disappoint myself by missing easy shots. So what you are saying makes perfect sense. I just don’t get enough table time. Great video thanks.👍

Total agree, it's definitely worth working on hitting the centre of the cue ball or at least the part of the cue ball you want to hit consistently early on as without that no amount of trickery for learning angles is going to help.

Great video. I've always "over thought" it. But more recently, it seems I've known the angles all this time, but the problem has pretty much always been how I've been hitting the white... Not cueing though in a straight line etc etc.

It's made a great deal of improvement just trusting my instinct and paying attention to the white!

You know your onions!

I miss loads of pots by adding unwanted side so finding that magic spot on the cue ball is imperative! Reflections from wall lights! Thats a first!

I sometimes Double check by, magining. 2 Lines from the Object Ball, , Like train tracks, just to double check, , if they do not look right, stand back, and take another look.
Seems to work anyway mate..

What works 4 me is seeing the pocket in my peripheral vision while looking at object ball and cue ball

I tend to hit all over on white n love pingin it around as you do...cant do it as much on a star with match cloth thats a different game to the crappy tables 80pc of us mere mortals play on. Well anyway I have a few question 1. I notice that you cue like me slightly off centre...I find it much easier than hitting centre... I mean where the hell us that? JK
ROS does this too n (he's alright) pinched your line there ... 2 I think you are right with what you say but I think also think most go wrong not visualising the line of the white after contact and the pot (like a video game really) and I think it helps to see this first from standing - because over time that helps you see/recall the angles better which repeat all over the table and doing it this way I think helps you play better position which is everything in the game and most am players tend to focus more on just the pot when starting out and not so much position you can pot the ball in different ways and I just think they should teach the line of the shot more and try and get them to visualise the both the pot and line the OB will take after the hit this I think helps to naturally get down on properly on the right line and remember the potting angles. I visualise the line OB will take after contact and also the actual contact point needed with CB and OB work out the potting angle and route the white takes after contact mix the two together to aid getting down on the right line almost like I have a little commentator in my head. Saying that I had to think about this to describe it here as whenever I played my best or made a good break I actually dont think about anything but do remember timing it smooth and consistant. last time I made a big break someone asked me in club how I did this and that but I could not remember anything to tell him. I was all zoned up humming the killers song over n over in my head or something and basically not thinking about anything just doing it (did not tell him that he'd think I was nuts...)- only shots I tend to remember the ones I miss. and finally Q3 Met you once or twice n just wondered how the f you look the same age as you did when I met you 20 years ago. Did you spend all your prize money in Turkey on hair transplants n stuff because you dont seem to age at all? Stuff the aiming thing I wanna know that secret ..
