Spadone - the mysterious sword

The spadone was an Italian type of sword that was used around Europe, but what was it for? Is it a longsword? A greatsword? Something of its own? This video is just a teaser for a longer video that has time to get to grips with the topic.

Spadone simply means "great sword" in italian

I would consider them greatswords alongside zweihanders and claymores, different styles of the same class of sword. There are plenty of greatswords with and without the quillons along the blade and variations of them that I think size and function is a more consistent approach for categorization

Honestly, I'm a fan of medieval "area of denial" tactics. One madman in a crowd with a spadone attended by four chaps interspersed behind your targets with daggers.

I'd buy that tactic for a dollar. :D
