Normally you would reach for the headstock tuners, however once the nut is locked they are out of the equation. This step seems to confuse a bunch of people.

Here is the process...

I've been trying to tune a floyd rose for 2 hours to no success. I feel like picking the guitar up and smashing it

If you adjust the string tree up or down to the proper string angle, the strings won't be pulled sharp when you lock down the nut. The original version Floyd Rose didn't have fine tuners, so when it was locked, you had no means to tune it.

Thanks for this. I never knew. I have a Floyd rose Dean ML and I don’t tighten the locking nuts all the way for this reason so I can tune it without loosening.

honestly if the pitch changes when locking the nut, your T-bar isn't set at the correct angle. You set that bar so that the angle behind the nut does not change when locking. That is what causes the guitar to drift in pitch after locking. Generally you want to make the string be in 1 straight line from the 0-fret end of the nut towards that bar, no changes in the line whatsoever.

If it's going sharp when you put the lockers on, then you need to tighten that string bar just behind the nut.

How often would you recommend going through the trouble of unlocking the nut and tuning it there + the fine tuners?

A few key errors here.

Never tune a floating tremolo with it resting on anything. Always tune it while standing up, otherwise you will hear it straight away the moment you stand up it will go out of tune due to gravity.

Also you should never need to use finer tuners if you guitar is set up properly. Tightening the locking nut should not affect your guitars tuning at all EVER.

If your guitar is out when you tighten the locking nuts, the strings are not compressed enough by the little metal bar on the headstock which makes the strings lie flat on the metal of the locking mechanism.

If the strings are not flat in the locking nut tightening the metal bar will mean you do not have to retune your guitar when you lock the strings down.

It doesn't sharpen the string if you have the tensioner set properly

Where do you keep your hex key? I refuse to ise a floyd rose because the hours i practiced and improved my ear by tuning on the fly (from the headstock, as the rock gods intended) would have been wasted messing around with that floyd rose system.
