Flat feet (also called pes planus or fallen arches) is a postural deformity in which the arches of the foot collapse, with the entire sole of the foot coming into complete or near-complete contact with the ground. Sometimes children are born with flat feet (congenital).

There is a functional relationship between the structure of the arch of the foot and the biomechanics of the lower leg. The arch provides an elastic, springy connection between the forefoot and the hind foot so that a majority of the forces incurred during weight bearing on the foot can be dissipated before the force reaches the long bones of the leg and thigh.[1]

In pes planus, the head of the talus bone is displaced medially and distal from the navicular bone. As a result, the Plantar calcaneonavicular ligament (spring ligament) and the tendon of the tibialis posterior muscle are stretched to the extent that the individual with pes planus loses the function of the medial longitudinal arch (MLA). If the MLA is absent or nonfunctional in both the seated and standing positions, the individual has "rigid" flatfoot. If the MLA is present and functional while the individual is sitting or standing up on their toes, but this arch disappears when assuming a foot-flat stance, the individual has "supple" flatfoot. This latter condition is often treated with arch supports.[1]

I have flat feet and the only one in my family who has them. It does hurt my feet, calves, and shins to run or do any exercise. Which is why I chose to take Modern dance, which is a variation of ballet, lyrical, and contemporary. We dance barefoot and thus no pain whilst getting exercise!

Flatfooted my entire life, currently 44 years old. Growing up I never noticed a difference, aside from the look. No pain, no limitations, played sports, weightlifted and extremely active. I was even able to enlist with no hassle. Between 5 to 10 years ago I began to notice a change after taking on several positions where I was standing and/or standing in one place for several hours at a time. Simultaneously sports (basketball especially) was almost entirely cut out of my life (went from playing 2 to 5 hrs daily including full court pick up games, to playing 2 or 3 hours a week, alone. I believe the benefits upon my feet & ankles that developed from all of the physical activity are nearly lost now, and played a huge role in their health. It doesn't seem that it takes much activity these days for me to experience noticable pain, for example today after a few low impact days, I walked about 5 miles. I had nearly 0 pain setting out. Almost a mile in it was getting uncomfortable and 3.5 miles in it was extremely difficult to think of anything else. I've been off my feet now over 2 hours and my left piece is still throbbing like my noisy neighbors subwoofer.
I write this as a precaution to the younger people with fallen arches. Not saying this is your future, just saying whatever exercise you are doing now may be helping fight off the effects of time.
If I am off in my assessment, please do not hesitate to correct me. Peace.

My girlfriend has very high arches.
Not sure if that's responsible for her being an incredibly fast runner and extremely capable on steep, mountain trails.

Saddest thing is conservative measures won’t do much. We need surgical correction.

Is there any chance that probability of flat feet decreases if kids play sports or play out in the playgrounds or fields in general ?
