i always thought it came from the cuadratic formula deleting the +- part, because it's the point where the ecuation only has one solution, i never tought of it this way (sorry for bad english)

When using f'(x) =0 to find min/max of a function, how do you know if it's an absolute min/max or only a local one? Will you get more solutions if there are local(not absolute) min/max values?
