As an Mathematics major, I can attest that this is 100% true lol. We get so used to all the complicated junk that we have to learn, that basic stuff is so much more scary

i feel like this is due to
1. subconsciously memorizing formulas and squares and stuff
but more importantly,
2. If you miss something complicated thats fine, but if you miss basic addition or subtraction, god help you if anyone finds out

This is so true. As you expand into deeper math ideas you start to lose foundational math skills.

So relatable! Till our junior college we were not allowed to use calculator and we used to remember all the trigonometric formulae byheart and calculate many complicated calculations manually but later during engineering years when we hd calculators we were so dependent on it tht we used to perform evn simple addition/subtraction problems on it only.

If it were me, I could have very easily accidentally typed "9-5" into the calculator and written "4" as my final solution.
