Team India had a forgettable World Cup editions of 1975 and 1979 being played in England. Due to the disappointing performances, India went into 1983 World Cup with no expectations.

India started the World Cup Campaign with stunning victory over World Champions West Indies by 34 Runs and then against Zimbabwe by 5 Wickets. However, Team India faced demoralizing defeats against Australia by 162 Runs and then West Indies by 66 Runs. The next match was a Do or Die Game for Team India against Zimbabwe to enter into the Semi Final

India won the toss and elected to Bat first, the top order of Team India was blown away by Zimbabwe fast bowlers P. Rawson and K. Curran. With the likes of Gavaskar, Srikkanth, Amarnath, Sandeep Patil, Yashpal Sharma in the pavilion and India reeling at 17/5 and staring at a humiliating defeat, Kapil Dev walked into the crease.

Then something happened was beyond anybody's imagination.Kapil Dev slammed 175 runs off 138 balls with 16 fours and 6 sixes enabling India to post a formidable total of 266/8 of 60 overs. Eventually, India won the match by 31 Runs. This match was not televised as BBC was on Strike.

This innings of Kapil Dev was not just a foundation behind Team India winning the 1983 World Cup, it was also an innings which inspired many Generations.

Kevin Curran who took 3 wickets and scored 73 in that match is the father of Sam and Tom Curran who are doing wonders in Int’l and league cricket. What a talented family. I never knew that Kapils 175 was the first century in ODI cricket for India. Thanks for the wonderful video.

I was a teenager at that time and we used to listen to the running commentary rhrough transistors. What a match that was on that day. With India 17/5.kapildev played master innings 175n.o., with 19fours and6huge towering sixes. Finally India recovered t o score266. In 60overs..india won that match a crucial one to proceed in the tournament.
