What does an extractor and an ejector do? What is the difference?

⬇️Products Used in the Video are Listed Below.

These two terms are often confused by new gun owners. They have a similar goal but are two very different components in a handgun.

The extractor's job is to pull or extract the empty brass casing from a fired cartridge out of the chamber. The ejector can then throw or eject the casing out of the gun through the ejection port.

A quick tutorial on what an extractor does, where it is, and how it works. Extractors and ejectors are shown in several modern semi-automatic pistols and an AR-15.

I realize this is an 2 year old video and even though I know the difference between the two, this was a well detailed video and very easy to understand, and I can pass this on to others that do not know the difference. Thanks for sharing!!

You sir, are a fountain of information. I thoroughly enjoy learning about how my guns work, albeit slowly and modularly at a snails pace. It usually happens when I’m thinking about replacing something, like the extractor on my Dan Wesson ECP.

Extractor is in rifles that does 100% extraction. What people call extractor in blowback and recoil operated weapons is mostly holding cartridge's one side in order to help ejector work properly unless removing casing manually (unloading). It is not extracting casing from chamber when fired, casing moves back on its own and moves slide back.
