the fact these blades didn't suffer a catastrophic failure is nothing to scoff at. most impressive

They're both winners for being able to forge such massive blades. Did better than the claymores that were done on this show before

I really didnt expect both the blades to survive the strength test, i really expected at least one to fold

John shouldn't feel bad for losing at all, Mike had literally 10x more experience than him. John did great!

I never thought the "it will keel" would still sound good 9 seasons later, but it does. Iconic.

"That thing was too big to be called a sword. Too big, too thick, too heavy, and too rough, it was more like a large hunk of iron."

when I saw the size of the tarp, I half expected a guillotine to be behind it.
I wasn't necessarily wrong.

“It was too big to be called a sword. Massive, thick, heavy, and far too rough. Indeed, it was a heap of raw iron.”-Kentaro Miura

"Can I kill some enemies?"
"Sure, but only a swordful"
*pulls out comically large sword*

I've no idea if this was intentional, but this episode coincided with the release today of the Dutch film about Grote Pier. Quite awesome to see this legendary piece from my home country in this show.

The sword of Grutte Pier was manufactured in the German diocese of Passau (the center of sword making back then). The Frisian museum even has another sword from the same blacksmith and proved to be from the correct era when Pier was alive, and bearing tructural battle scars.
My thought is, considering Pier was a farmer, this sword, if it was truely wielded by him, must've been given to him by a wealthy noble to serve the rebellion

I'm amazed that both of these smiths managed to make swords that big. Even more so that neither suffered catastrophic failure at any point.

It's crazy to see swords flexing that much under their own weight. Impressive that they both held up.

Hadn't expected the sword of 'Grutte Pier' to ever be this show.

(The sword could be so big because he was very strong and tall. In legend it is said that he was able to lift an entire cart with one arm.)

Love watching this show. It's amazing to see how they build everything and the craftsmanship that people have

There is also a film adaptation about this. I played in this myself as an extra in a few scenes. Nice that a piece of my country's history is in forged in fire.

Much respect to the Forged in Fire crew, and the bladesmiths, those were really outstanding blades for only having 3 days. But they really should have got some guys for whom a sword like this would have been made. It would have been neat to see what blades like that could do in the hands of someone like Björnsson.

That's actually fairly unfair to these two. That is one monster piece of steel to forge and finish in the same time all others have with significantly smaller blades. Well done to these two for not snapping like the other 2 handed styles on the show. Looks more like a Warhammer blade for Orks

Those are both some of the best swords of seen on this show. These guys did amazing!

love this style of European sword just wish they used proper technique with it, the main style used with larger swords of this style consisted of keeping the blade in motion not just to build momentum & amplify force but also because stopping & reversing direction with this blade will cause it to twist under its own weight
