Dave Chappelle Faces Backlash for Latest Netflix Special — Does He Deserve to Be Canceled?

To say Dave Chappelle’s latest comedy special has rubbed some people the wrong way would be an understatement. From threats of boycotts to Netflix employees quitting their jobs if the streaming platform doesn’t remove the special, the comedian’s jokes about the LGBTQ+ community have us all talking. But should he be canceled?

Imagine Dave speaking about his trans friend killing herself and how it hurt him because of the backlash she got by her own community, and the trans community completely ignores that part, and continue to rage in spite of what happened to her.

Loni I don’t agree. If we go back in the day when he was on the Nutty Professor he made fun of Sherman when he was on the date with Jada Pinkett-Smith. Nobody canceled him back then. He has numerous skits on the Dave Chappelle Show that going by today’s standards should have gotten him canceled. So it’s ok for comedians to make jokes about fat people, black people, white people, gay people, but the line is drawn at transgender? Furthermore, Dave wasn’t even making fun of transgender people in his stand up. He was simply stating his experiences🤷🏾‍♀️ People are incredibly sensitive these day😒🙄 Comedy is slowly turning into playground “Yo Mama” jokes. It’s a dying craft…

Dave has made jokes about everyone. No one is safe with him. So I'm just gonna assume folks have never seen the Chappelle show or any of his standups. You can't cancel Dave.

I’m surprised none of the ladies mentioned my favorite moment when Dave educated a lot of folk about how early on BW were never included in the “feminist” movement using Sojourner Truth’s famous “Ain’t I a Women?” speech she gave to a room full of white feminists, including Susan B. Anthony, when they wouldn’t let her participate in the meeting bc she was a BW.

Dave Chapelle tells jokes. He jokes about everyone. Straight, Gay, Bi, Trans, Feminism, Whites, Blacks. You name it, he'll joke about it. The real issue here is certain groups' capacity to take offence.

The ironic thing is that part of his performance centres on his friend Daphne, a trans woman. He speaks about how she stood up for him against online hate from the trans community, then how she got dragged through the mud on twitter by trans sections as a result and then eventually killed herself. It's tragic and makes it even more important that we read between the lines.

In making jokes about the trans community, Chappelle is treating them the same as every other community he jokes about. In taking offence and backslashing, the trans community are showing where the hate actually lies.

All I have to say is I love Garcelle on the show. She gives such a different perspective and most of the time, it’s completely opposite of the other girls’ opinons. She’s so respectful and articulate & I respect her for that whether I agree or disagree with her.

Everything Garcelle said was on point. I think the rest of them missed what Dave was actually saying in his special. At the end of the day, he was saying that everything goes back to racism, favoritism, oppression, etc.

Dave didn’t do anything wrong imo he wasn’t giving a TEDtalk, he was doing comedy which often exaggeration
