What is the Golan Heights?

On 19 September, Donald Trump spoke at the Israeli-American Council National Summit in Washington, D.C.

'Miriam and Sheldon (Adelson) would come into the White House almost more than anybody…and they were always after something for Israel. But I gave them the Golan Heights.'

But what does he mean he "gave Israel" the Golan Heights? And why is this territory significant?

The Golan Heights are Syrian lands that were found to have large oil reserves. America went in to Syria and barricaded the Heights to steal the oil. Russia is in Syria now attempting to get it back.

The Golan was part of Israel since biblical times. Only in 1946 France "set up" a state called Syria, and attached to it the Golan Heights. So the Golan was part of Syria for only 21 years since 1946 and part of Israel for 57 years when Syria gave it up in the 6 Day War. It could not win back the Golan Heights in 1973. Is there a Syria today? Kurds, Russia and Iran all control large chunks. It no longer functions as a State. And just because Syria wants it does not make it so.

Israel can get water from the sea using desalination and other methods (pricey but can be done). But Golan Heights is where the head waters are of most rivers downstream and thus allows Israel to have leverage by being able to control the water supply of West Bank, Gaza and Jordan.

On 19 June 1967, the Israeli cabinet voted to return the Golan to Syria in exchange for a peace agreement. This was rejected after the Khartoum Resolution, in which Syria declared to never normalize relations with Israel and to never recognize the state of Israel. Israel since then offered the return of the golan heights multiple times under these conditions. Syria declined again.
