40 Years since Israel declared Golan heights sovereignty

Israel conquered the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War, and claimed sovereignty in 1981

Israel on Tuesday marked 40 years since Menachem Begin’s government officially established the Jewish state’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights territory that it conquered from Syria.

While Israel still holds claim to the northern region, much has changed in the area since then.

Syria used to have their artillery on top of the Golan before the 6 day war where they would sit up there and fire shells into Israeli farms with impunity. Syria lost the Golan during the 6 day war, Jordan lost half its Kingdom and Egypt lost the Sanai. Rightly so. Israel humilliated Egypt by destroying their army and Syria and Jordan paid the price for their complicity in a militant encirclement of Isreal. Long live Israel.

Im pretty sure all the Druze on the Israeli side of the Golan Heights are very happy and the Druze on the Syrian side wished they were on the other side of the border. They wont say it out loud of course.

54 years ago the Golan/Bashan, returned to its rightful owners, the Children of Israel. 40 years ago, the area was formally made part of Israel.

Natural growth, it is an integral and strategic part of Israel.

When I was a child in the 1950s I recall reading that Syrian soldiers would shoot into Israel from the Golan Heights.
