Easier said than done with cover letters. After sending 4 or 5 cover letters, which could take me 30min to 1hour, and not getting a response from an employer or rejected, I just came up with a generic template and changed a couple of things for each job. I found an old cover letter from the 2008 recession where I just put a picture of grumpy cat on a word document and sent that in.

I always put cover letter on the back burner because it always felt like I was rewriting the resume in a letter/paragraph format. Never heard of T format before and sounds like a good simple way to connect job requirements and experience. Will use it in the future. Thanks!

Thank you so much professor. I was thinking about this all day today. When I back from work and open my computer, this is the first notification I got. I was thinking to create two to three pages Resume. I didn't now before, but now I know. Thank you so much.

This is very important. We keep hearing about the shortage in cyber security, yet when we get all the necessary certs and send out our resumes, we still get rejections.

This is one of the most educational and insightful videos on YouTube. It should have more views, and not just for IT people. This is for people who really want a job.

Thanks Professor Messer! The job hunt has been a bit painful but these tips have been helpful in adjusting my resume to hopefully get passed some of the barriers in place. Though over the last month of being unemployed I did get my Sec+ and am working towards CySA+ next. Really hoping to get my foot in the door working in cybersecurity.

Thank you sir. Could you please make a video on how a resume should be for a person who transcends into IT from another field with many job gaps. Also how to mention the reason for job gaps in resume & in the interview. Thank you.

How would this differ if you're fresh out of school or have very little real world experience? Also, under which section would you list an IT certification? Education? Experience? Etc...

I have a question Mr. Messer: I have ~4.5 years of experience in customer service (from food service, a call center, and driving for a food delivery service). Would customer service be a valid form of experience for a help desk position on top of having my A+? From what I've read, IT help desks are innately customer service positions, or at the very least utilize skills learned from customer service environments.

I bought the indeed video resume rewrite with edits that I can apply to my own resume, so I did, and I started writing cover letters, and follow ups, customized to each individual application, but what I'm finding is that a lot of companies want experience for admittance into an entry level position like help desk, they want one or two years experience, and I'm wondering why they don't train people anymore, or is there some gap in the talent pool where people have experience and somehow want an entry level position in a job, especially remote, versus not having any experience with say help desk but other things. I have over five years of customer service experience. I'm looking to switch careers into IT. I recently graduated and have certifications. I have been rejected dozens of times in the past few months. Mainly I find it as a catch 22 situation where companies want experience for entry level, which if I had experience, I would want level two. If you think about it, does it make sense to you? Because it does not totally make sense to me.

It it possible that LinkedIn recruiters will find me without having to network, based only on an excellent resume?
Also, is it worth creating a separate section with personal accomplishments, like "built and administer 14TB unRAID server", "configure and manage personal home SOHO network"
I have no previous corporate IT experience, but I have A+ and Google IT Support specialist certs. I'm looking for things to help me stand out from the crowd.

I wonder how to describe a student job or other mini job in which the accomplishment is little and cannot be quantified.

Thank you for this professor. Where did you get the layout for the resume in the video?

I'd be very interested in your thoughts on my particular situation. I have a B.S. in Computer Science and I'm seeking employment as a COBOL developer where my expertise lies. I have roughly 10 years of experience in developing legacy software with basically two employers. The issue is I have not recently worked in that capacity. I left that discipline in the late 90's and migrated to management and supervision in the customer service and distribution realm. The work from home opportunities and demand for COBOL developers has opened doors that would not otherwise be open without the great pandemic experiment of moving so many to work from home. How would you approach writing a resume with a large gap in experience (over 20 years) in the particular discipline you wish to exploit? COBOL developers are in high demand because of the sheer volume of code still running on big iron (mainframe computers).
