You can choose which of your photos will be appear on the folder icon in Windows File Explorer.
It can be photo or any other picture from any folder in your computer and you don't need any special software to change folder icon. You can set picture for folder icon in folder properties, and customize folder picture. Then choose a file to show on this folder icon.

My concern is the low resolution-display of the customized folder icon.

When changing the FOLDER ICON with the pre-created icons contained in the shell32.dll, the icon will appear a little blurry than that of the default one. I tried creating my own(sample.ico) with a 512x512 to see if it have something to do with the actual resolution of the icons, but it didn't fix the problem.

No matter the resolution I used, the displayed icon would still appear a little blurry. Is there a way to make the customized icon appear to be as sharp as the default icon?

No offence intended, but this not helpful at all, you are just selecting an image file which is super easy. I want to use the thumbnail from one of the apps (games) that are stored in the folder. There's no shortage of 'how to" guides showing what you've done (just select a pic), but I cannot find anything for using the thumbnail from an app. W10 get's the SH*Ts with me and tells me to bugger off because the app thumbnail is not an image file. But all the same, thanks heaps for trying.

Edit: just wanna let you know, it's incredibly hard to hear you clearly.
