How to Change Folder Icon Picture MacBook

Mac how to change the icon image for a folder or file on MacBook Pro 16 or other modern Mac computers.

i want to change the location of my pictures library so it is on an external drive, and then have that show on the sidebar so that is the default location. Any ideas?

It didn't work for me. It gave me a JPEG icon pic rather than the actual photo itself.

Does this only work on desktop folders? Is there a specific image type that works best (jpeg, png, heic, etc.)? Thanks

It doesn't work on my mac 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 it shows the image I'm trying to change it with but then reverts to whatever image was before. 🙄 Annoying technology

or just drag the image and drop it on top of the folder located on the top left from the folder info.

Thank You! I was doing it another way for years then suddenly Mac would not let be do it that way any more. Your trick works. thanks again. It makes it so much easier to find what you are looking fr when you have a pic icon instead of just the file icon.

Mac computers are crap. everything is difficult
Windows will video pics in Ur folders, without this long shitty process

If I wanna view a photo inside the same folder as folder cover ? am sure U cannot do that
Because U need a photo from the web. WHat a shitty operating system

This is great while the folder remains on the same hard drive. Moving it onto an external drive the folder image defaults to default again. (Sonoma 14)

I followed the steps but the folder icon is all pixelated. Like 10 line resolution.
