Easter is one of the oldest and most popular festivities. Yet, few truly grasp its real significance and origin. Because of this, the story of Easter is often misinterpreted. In the English language, two words refer to Easter: Passover and Easter. Passover means "to pass over" and derives from the Hebrew verb to "leap." The origin and meaning of Easter are unknown. Some attempt to link the origin of this word to an ancient pagan goddess remembered through customs occurring at the onset of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. However, there is a lack of historical evidence for this.
In fact, for Christians, the origin of Easter is rooted in the Jewish Passover instituted by God through Moses while the Hebrews were still in Egypt. The elements of Jewish Passover were roasted lamb meat and bitter herbs, referencing the suffering experienced by the Hebrews in Egyptian lands, and the haste with which they were taken from there. Subsequently, Jewish Passover was celebrated as an annual festival until the time of Jesus Christ. The New Testament records that on the night Jesus Christ was betrayed, he celebrated the last Passover with his disciples and then instituted the Lord's Supper as a memorial of his death on the cross, replacing Jewish Passover. From then on, the biblical text presents Jesus Christ as the perfect and ultimate Passover Lamb for all who believe in him.
