Do you struggle with pricing? Are you happy with your current prices, why, why not? Let me know!

Pricing was definitely a black box for me so I did as much research as possible to begin, including reaching out to other illustrators in my country and asking what they charge. The numbers were so varied! I ended up settling on using my time + reasonable hourly wage to come up with a price. I did not think about value though in the sense that you described it. I am so glad I watched this before working on terms for my next contract. Considering royalties, revenue and profit margins is so fair! Thank you so much for your rich and thoughtful content Ness :)

The advice you share on your channel is an absolute godsend. I can guess you are probably tired of reading this from so many but from myself thank you. This and your advice on building a children's illustration portfolio is beyond helpful. You share with everyone advice I never got in College even when I tried to ask during my education, but alas I'm sure lecturers expect students to find certain things out on their own.

Pricing based on value is an interesting point, and I've seen this point made by other artists as well. One question I have, how do you ask a client to reveal their sales/budget information? In the example you use, they expect $100, 000 in revenue, so you price you service according to that. But not many clients I've seen are willing to give away their sales/income numbers so easily -- Especially to someone they haven't yet signed an agreement with.

In my experience, smaller clients tend to be more open and clear with their budgets, but larger clients tend to be more secretive about their processes.

Great video again. Like most new illustrators, I too struggle with a little bit of imposter syndrome and undervalue my work. For the most part, I've been just developing my style and look, but haven't put together a portfolio. I need to take care of that first.

Most of the commission inquiries that I get are from my social media channels, and it's usually a friend or acquaintance who love my work, but most are horrible potential clients. I either get:
- can you make this art for some really low price?
- wow, how much do I charge? even for a friend? (BTW, I don't go to my dentist friends asking for cheap dental work)
- you make art, can you make this completely different style of art for me?
- people who know I make art, trying to get something cheap, will ask: "I'm looking for a cheap artist, do you know of any?" *hint, hint.

Because of this, I've closed off any commission requests that I get from social media.

My next step is to get my portfolio started then in a good place. Then, based on what I've learned here, figure out my best viable rate and stick with it. Then pursue actual paying clients.

Cheers,

Richard

I 💯 % agree with you regarding value and time I also believe quality and experience do play a factor in quoting rates.
Quality of the work can either make or break the final product and the more experience one has can mean the client has less to worry about in regards to will the job be done, done to there liking and done on time.
BTW...
Great video! 👍🏻😊👍🏻

I work with portraits and realism, most companies and high paying clients don't even go for it. And social media I don't find the right place either, I've been working for 7 yrs. I got only two commissions. Do you think I should change my entire art work to make income out of it?

Hey Ness! Thank you for this info. Just wondering, do illustrator agents set prices for a project?

Question. If I do a children's book and have already charged them, then they decide they want the rights to use the artwork on T shirts too, is it normal for me to ask for royalties on the t shirts that get sold?
