Great lecture, one update since 2013 when this was published. The long-standing idea that the monsoon is just a large scale land-sea breeze has been replaced in recent years. From Gadgil 2018: "observations of the space–time variations of the monsoon over the Indian region are not consistent with the expectation that theascent/rainfall over land will increase with increasing land–ocean contrast." She explains an alternative hypothesis that: "the monsoon is a manifestation of the seasonal variation of the rising limb of the Hadley cell, i.e., the equatorial trough/ITCZ or near equatorial trough associated with the occurrence of this system over the monsoonal region in the summer."
