Dr. Ferguson... I'm *really* tickled by your statement right up front that Eyjafjallajökull's eruption sucked a lot of time from your academic and other pursuits.

It oughta show you as a true scientist because (as I know you did) you took in all you saw, and added it to what you know and how you see it.

I'm not a scientist by training (electronics engineering was my training long ago, and I'm old enough to be your father: I was 200 years old when St. Helenms did its thing), but I *am* a scientist by inclination, and I appreciate how well you've tailored this whole lecture to suit an "educated lay audience".

Brava, Professor. :-)

Oh, and I used to do stage sound that included remote mics. Lots of them are *far* too subject to either RF interference or insufficient signal strength to cover a whole stage... and that's (or was back then) a good reason to spend extra money - on equipment you've *fully researched* before taking it to your stage. Not your department, Julie... but not a bad thing to needle someone about if you have the chance. :-)

At 32:10;
The question-
Does anyone what mountain this is on the right?
A student says Mt. Fuji.
She agrees.
FALSE!
That is Mt. Rainier.
I live in Seattle Washington.
I stare at this mountain every single day of my 57 years living in western Washington.
This picture was taken from due north, mid-day, probably near Buckley Washington.
The other picture is Mauna Loa.
I have stood at that point on Mauna Kea looking over at Mauna Loa.

The numbers at 16:00 add up to 100%. What about the metamorphic rocks?
