3 Tips For Beginner Artists

Показать описание
Transcript: Beginnings are beautiful. Wiggly babies, new cities, new jobs: beginnings are full of promise and excitement for the unknown. Beginning as an artist is also beautiful – but it can feel intimidating and overwhelming to start out on such an open-ended journey.
Today we are sharing three pieces of advice for all beginner artists. If you’re a seasoned artist, you might want to stick around, it might be time for a refresh!
It’s important to separate your art from your self worth. Creating is deeply personal – that’s one of the things that makes it so engrossing and powerful. But beginner artists (and honestly all artists) need to remember that your artwork doesn’t define you as a person. If you draw a terrible sketch, that doesn’t mean you’re a terrible person; it doesn’t even mean that you’re bad at drawing. It might mean you need practice.
Art is a whirlwind of emotions: you’ll love your piece one day and hate it the next. Separating your self-worth from your artwork will give you a sense of balance and help you ride the highs and lows of creating.
Stop waiting for inspiration. Inspiration is great, but it’s not always a lightbulb *wow* moment. Sometimes inspiration comes from purposefully seeking it out. You might need to change up your routine, think about your “why,” or seek fresh ideas from other artists.
Instead of waiting for – or hunting down – inspiration, consider making your artistic process part of your daily routine. Use a journal like Zinnia to mark out daily time to make art. Creating begets creating.
Other art forms can feed your art. You’ve discovered graphic design and that’s all you can think about. You listen to podcasts, read books, take online classes, and follow graphic artists on social media. That’s great. It’s important to immerse and educate yourself when starting to learn a new art form. However, it’s important to remember that other art forms are great sources of inspiration and influence on each other. The artistic experience isn’t a vacuum; quite the opposite – art is an interpretation and expression of your experience of the world, and it requires some sort of stimulus to thrive.
To take our example above: if you’re into graphic design, don’t forget to immerse yourself in other art forms. Watch dancers and think about how movement translates into design. Read a book and think about the themes and mental images that might make beautiful designs. Cook a meal and look at the shapes of the food in your hands and on your plate. Broad influences can impact your work in specific ways.
Your artistic evolution is yours alone, but there are universal problems – and solutions – that will help you along the way. We hope some of this advice will provide helpful support as you explore creativity.
