RIP CS2 Surfers

Prior to CS2, Surfing was one of if not the largest community game mode in the series. It was fun, competitive, and completely unique to the game's identity for 20 years.

But the release of a new game almost killed it and many are worried it might never recover.

it's kinda ironic that they killed CSGO to not fracture the playerbase and now are fracturing the playerbase with being incapable of introducing a good server browser and proper community server support that not breaks everything.

Didn't try surfing till cs2. You don't need to be a long time surfer to know that running into a ramp bug every 3 attempts is not right.

I just wish that everything wouldn't just keep getting worse and worse online. Everywhere you look every service gets worse and more expensive all the time. Shit is mad depressing.

fun fact, there's a sourcemod plugin in team fortress 2 to fix ramp bugs and it works pretty well. If a rampbug is detected it pushes you slightly out of the ramp. Shout out to ya boi bshear

I like cs2 but csgo surfing / kz / bhop is just better. Idk wtf it is, but idc if they fix servers, ramp bug, or optimization. I'm always gonna just launch csgo when i join a movement server. They got !ws as well so thats a bonus

The type of people who make community mods and stuff are moving to the fortnite/epic, or roblox environment or just making their own games. It’s never been easier to make a game. Why make a free mod that’s liable to break when you can develop a mod in a monetized environment or your own game and self publish? When the source 2 environment lacks documentation, guides, support, and monetization? It’s the complete opposite of what source used to be.

Let's be real, Valve is not what it was. The fact they treat CS2 and TF2 so poorly says a lot. They dont have any engagement with the community and do very little to innovate or address issues quickly with their games. Deadlock also being their next indevelopment game shows their hand on what they are focusing on.

I wouldve loved for you guys to show what momentummod is doing for the movement community rn. They are literally creating a whole new game with a heavy focus on all source based movement games

Here's hoping Momentum Mod actually decides to go into a live/ complete state sometime this decade.

The fact that basically no big community shifted to CS2 for Surfing or bhopping speaks Volumens.
I tried both surf and bhop and while im not a pro, Ive got lots of hours and I can usually get stuff complete until about Tier 4.
Ramp buds, server hickups, everything.
Really looking forward to Momentum Mod, which im currently playtesting.
Really promising and absolutely no Ramp Bugs whatsoever due to optimization.

I clocked up 5k hours on CSS solely playing community servers, scouts knives, gungame, breakfloor, zombie, dm, nades only, etc. When GO released that was all gone, so that's when I first started playing competitive and I've always hated it, all the sweaty camping, holding angles, nerdy nade lineups and microsecond timing etc was just never my play style. I just want to hold W and click heads. In fact I even switched to Battlefield 3 for several years because it was way more loose and fun.

This isn't limit to only surfers, but for the majority of community servers, majority of CS's playerbase come from community server which is not supported very well currently. I think their main focus right now is on the competitive side of the game, if they really want the player base back, they should also focus on the community side as well.

got into cs in 2015 and enjoyed the game a lot, but I met someone in matchmaking and he started surfing after our game. it absolutely changed my life and I absolutely would not stop surfing, and still do it quite frequently. a couple of notes I have about this vid (repster did a really good job with the main reasons for cs2 surf dying) in regards to surf as a whole:
yes, people do take it that seriously. think of it as a speedrunning community, where people are constantly trying to innovate on new maps, or grind out small improvements on older maps. the best part about surfing is you don't have to be the best in the world to feel satisfaction, you can just enjoy the feeling of getting a new personal best. some of my favorite feelings is playing a map I haven't played in a while and destroying my time because I have improved so much since last time I played that map.
the other major thing is the movement communities seem to be in a sort of limbo right now. i will say for myself, that I haven't been surfing as much recently because it feels like it won't be as enjoyable or gratifying until momentum mod comes out. if you don't know about momentum mod look it up, its basically a standalone surf game and is going to be amazing, it is just being done by a small dev team out of passion and they will slowly but surely put it out and it will most definitely revive interest in the gamemode. until then, its either buy counter strike source, struggle through cs2, or play on a much smaller community (tf2, cs 1.6, roblox etc)
