He's not the most technical, nor the best live drummer, but his parts goes HAND IN HAND with the guitar parts, and that's what makes those song so legendary.
Good parts that compliment good guitar riffs works, and metallica is proof of that. Yes, technical drumming parts are nice, but you need that style that works with the song, not just fast and technical drumming. No matter how technical your part is, if it doesn't fit with the guitars, you have a bad song.

As a drummer myself I wouldn't put him in my top 10 but his drumming isnt that bad. His style matches the songs.

people just don’t get it, he’s a composer he’s a primary song writer, an excellent arranger.
things that a lot of extremely talented technical drummers aren’t part of at all in their respected bands.
what people also don’t get it, is lars is from the 80’s and he revolutionised a style, no one did what he did before him.
that’s the difference. it’s easy to look back, and go “errr he sucks”
it’s not easy to imagine being there in the mid 80’s when music like that had never existed, and he was one of the KEY pioneers.

I hope you all comprehend that Metallica has played over 2, 000 live shows in their career... I think I would be in a wheelchair if I played that many shows!
The guy is going to be 59 years old and hes still rocking. Give him a little bit of credit.

It’s just funny that the metaphor being used for his drumming resume is a mountain of used diapers

For people saying Lars sucks live. Yes, but on some occasions. Have you any idea how many shows he plays? How many songs? To be 100% perfect on all of the live shows is literally not possible. He's human, not a drum machine.

(edit: maybe a reason why this comment got so many likes is because this is a completely reasonable and senseble opinion. You're not saying anything by saying there's far better drummers. YES NO SHIT THERE ARE. This is about how Lars is a far better musician and drummer than most people give him credit for)

I admire Lars. Play music is emotion, is sweat, is passion. Everyone can fail cause we are humans and not robots.

He's a fantastic drummer. He may not be perfect live now, but he's also getting up there in the years. He can't keep the same pace he used to forever

A composer, businessman, and a drummer all in one

His fills and off time cymbal hits are really awesome. His drumming in the verse sections of Wherever I May Roam are so eerie.

He's not just a drummer. He's an amazing songwriter too. Overall, a band member every musician would dream of

I think he WAS a awesome drummer. His skills have faded with age.

"Lars sucks" comes from his Live perfomances

I love Metallica, they are my favorite band, and honestly back in the day he was a super great drummer, but after he stopped practicing in the 90’s it was very obvious his playing had become not so good, more recently it seems like he’s been practicing more, but still not very great. I hope he continues to practice and improve, still love Lars.

Lars is my favorite drummer of all time! 🥁 🤘🏼

Listen to his isolated drum tracks! He has a certain groove and swing to his playing. Plus, he's a great songwriter and arranger. He's a genius as far as I'm concerned. I never listen to the silly haters. Mike Portnoy, Joey Jordison, and Mario Duplantier are just a few drummers that love Lars. I think they know a little about drumming.

Well one thing I can say, is that Lars Ulrich drumming is clearly recognizable. Giving an identity to an instrument that doesn't sound with notes is a pretty good thing.

He's not bad and he's not the greatest

He's just above average or good

But he fits metallica lile a glove and without him there would be no metallica
