In the preceding summer, Fincantieri Marinette Marine, the shipbuilder, initiated the construction of the inaugural Constellation-class frigate for the US Navy. This milestone was marked by the ceremonial cutting of steel at the shipyard located in Wisconsin on August 31.

Fincantieri has scheduled the keel laying of the USS Constellation, the first ship of the Constellation-class frigates, for this August. This event will denote a significant milestone as it will be the US Navy's first frigate introduced since the retirement of its last Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate in 2015.

With its anticipated arrival later in this decade, the USS Constellation will symbolize the reintroduction of a relatively compact yet versatile ship class to the US Navy.

In this video, Defense Updates analyzes how US Navy plans to quickly ramp up muscle with Constellation Frigates?

As another youtuber has pointed out there is a shipyard already producing frigate size hulls. Ingalls Shipbuilding is finishing up it's contract with the US Coast Guard to build Legend Class cutters. These hulls are of similar size and capabilities to the Constellation Class frigates. Ingalls is already WELL OUT ON THE LEARNING CURVE building these ships. Ingalls submitted a proposal for a frigate but did not win the contract. Ingalls would make an excellent choice as a second shipyard to build frigates. Making 40 frigates from two shipyards would be a step in the right direction.

About time we built frigates again! However, we need to build ones that aren’t stupid; As much as I liked the Perry-class frigate I was on, the Jarrett, it was a stupid design, being made with aluminum, THAT BROKE in heavy seas. So what did they replace them with? MORE ALUMINUM SHIPS, the LCS class…. that breaks if it goes fast or in heavy seas. And now all being retired. Not only do I like frigates, but I live in Wisconsin. So I hope the new ones are worth the money this time, and built to serve for at least 40 years!

Anything will be a welcome replacement for those useless LCS ships!

More defense contractors needed asap! We need more options both for competitiveness and to relieve bottle necks in the defense department.

lots of steel going to Wisconsin means lots of work for me

There is no longer a rapidly built US Navy ship. There is not enough shipyard capacity or skilled employee base.

As much as the US classes this ship as a Frigate, but over 7, 000tons means she's a destroyers by tonnage with half the fire power but with the same open ocean capabilities As her Arleigh Burke class counter parts

There are crew shortages on the existing DDG51 ships. Where will the crew for these come from?

American peace time industrial greed and lethargy due to lack of price competition make each new generation of "cost saving" size reduced class cost more than the previous "too expensive" class.

Happens everywhere. US defense contractors without real competition are a burden on US taxpayers.

Only the US Military can make a standard cardboard box from Amazon cost 300X more while still doing the same thing.

I served aboard USS McMorris diesel DE. It was de-commisioned after I was only on it for 6 months. Sold to Indonesia. We sat off the east coast of the USSR as they did missile testing.

I think the USCG Legend class Cutters will be a good frigate if they slap it with mk45 guns and 32 mk41 vls while the Connie's is under construction.

They need a way to increase the number of VLS cells. 32 is not enough if we are going to have 40+ of them.

It always bothered me that they planned publicly for only 20 or so. It just seemed to small for a new class of ship.

It's not much smaller than a Arleigh Burke class destroyer, but carries only about 1/3 of the firepower; I'm not sure of the point, unless it is significantly cheaper.

Hope these ships last longer than Freedom and Inpendence class ships

For it's size this ship appears relatively lightly armed. 48VLS should be a minimum, ideally 64, plus the other weapons. Then you have a kick ass all round design

Its a shame this wasn't thought out and implemented back when the US started their Shallow Water Fleet of semi useful / quite expensive Naval Platforms ie: Littoral platforms.

The Navy is trying to make these ships as Arleigh Burkes but smaller, cheaper and supposedly multi-mission. But when you try to be jack of all trades, you end up as master of none. They need to be dedicated ASW ships. Also...bring back ASW to the Coast Guard as well for their larger cutters.
