"I can't tell you who makes it through."

Proceed to tell them who makes it through.

My dad was a former navy seal. He was also a fucking sociopath so take that as you will.

I care not for the strongest or the smartest, but for the helping hand rather than the knife in my back.

suffering doesn't seem so bad when you're not doing it alone

Naval Academy graduate here (class of '99!); my brother-in-law is a Navy SEAL. We have talked about our Idoc experiences and there is a common theme: all challenges are designed to be solved with teamwork.
You aren't expected to be able to do 200 push-ups, but you are expected to try, and to keep encouraging the person next to you even if you can't keep going. The goal is that you don't give up. Can't keep doing push-ups? Stay down there on your face, shouting your lungs out as you KEEP PUSHING anyway. Can keep doing push-ups? Yell encouragement at the person next to you who is struggling.
I was a strong runner. When someone couldn't finish the 10-mile run, I ran back to them and jogged alongside them as they walked, jogged, or crawled their way to the finish line. All that matters is that we got there together.
I'm not one of those people who advocates that everyone should go through military services (that's a TERRIBLE idea!), but the military does teach quite a lot of good life-lessons.

Knowing you can depend on someone no matter what makes a huge difference if someone is successful.

It's something about being broke down but still willing to keep going and help others that shows who the real ones are

Literally: "Not the strongest or the smartest, but those who have the will to fight"

I was drowning in a rip tide off the coast of Florida. After fighting to stay afloat for what seemed like hours, but was probably less than 10 minutes, I was exhausted and couldn't keep up anymore, and I started sinking. Something inside me screamed at me. It told me to keep fighting, that there was no reason to stop trying, that to stop meant death. Somehow, all my fatigue just melted away. A few minutes later someone finally came for me and saved my life. I've felt what this guy is saying. I always assumed this was normal.

My Dad made it though. ( frogman) never heard him complain, always joking, never got flustered. He’s still the same today at 91.

I spent 12 years in Army special forces. I’m 5’6” and weigh 155 lbs. In selection I saw so many big guys breakdown and quit, or cry, or just freak out. After training my team was referred to as “Team Smurf.” There were no big guys, just a bunch of lean serious soldiers. I never saw anyone shiver in fear, but I did see a lot of guys just break down at an emotional level.

This reminds me of a story I heard about navy seals staying the night in the ocean and they could only leave if someone volunteered to quit. So they sang songs together as a big group till the sun came up

I had similar experience with my team at our McDonald’s restaurant. Only those who could dig deep and help their team mate out in times of high stress would make it to assistant manager.

In short, it appears moreso mental strength, perseverance, level of care and dedication as a team. good video.

I am not a Navy SEAL, but I was in the military and there was one saying about the value of teamwork that has always kept me going. "It's a lot easier to keep up than to catch up."

As someone who joined the navy without knowing how to swim, and making it through the swim qual on the final chance/day, and graduated boot the following morning, I can tell you that it definitely takes fear and determination.
